She says she's open to it but doesn't find it as intuitive. So there's a chance.

To be fair, neither Reddit was intuitive when I first started using it.

Reddit having a glut of third party apps for viewing and navigating at your preference really helped with outreach.

Now those options are gone.

She’s not wrong. Gonna be a long while before this place is accessible to “normies”. UX issues aside, it’s buggy and unstable. Late adopters have no tolerance for this stuff.

Tbh I kinda like the clunkyness of it. It’s a bit rough but feels organic.

[-] rockSlayer@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I'm trying to avoid it since this is the most important growth period, but the experience is far better as a lurker

[-] CodingAndCoffee@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago

My wife is also a scab sticking to reddit. Unfortunately, a good reason for doing so is that a lot of the niche woman-oriented subs she's on don't exist in the fediverse yet.

[-] czarrie@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

That's the problem, even if technically the platform is the worst option, it is a pain to try and relocate a community.

I had to do it with like 70 people from Google Hangouts to another service a few years back and it was crazy how hard just getting everyone into a basic service is. Any new or weird quirk will absolutely chase people back - especially if the original service is still working

[-] blargh1111@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

I tried to find equivalents here but nothing yet, or massive amounts of NSFW type subs.

So I'm trying this out, but keeping my gender specific account on there in the meantime. But fuck the reddit app, it's browser or nothing.

Mine is waiting till a few apps start to hit the App Store before she tries it. I think once a handful of the more polished apps start to make it out of their test flights, we’ll start to see another decent sized migration over here.

[-] YourFavouriteNPC@feddit.de 3 points 1 year ago

The Boost dev is working on a Boost app for Lemmy atm. I can't wait to finally get the notification that it's available for download.

[-] TheBraveSirRobin@lemmy.fmhy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

My guy, I'm happy for you. I was a RIF guy myself, but I'm glad you'll be getting your app back

[-] bobbo@midwest.social 1 points 1 year ago

Fortunately I don’t think you’ll have to wait too long. I’ve been using Memmy in Test Flight since really early builds and it’s extremely impressive how mature and feature rich this app has gotten. The last update (which are usually daily) made themes customizable to the point where I basically have the app looking like how I had Apollo customized. It’s close to being fully reviewed and approved for the App Store.

[-] BecomingTheFalcon@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Same, I’m using Memmy myself and I’m loving it. The dev working on it has been killing it, I’m hoping they get their approval from Apple soon.

[-] BigTed@lemmy.fmhy.ml 9 points 1 year ago

My wife just saw this when trying lemmy for the first time

[-] Swootpatoot@lemmy.one 6 points 1 year ago

But did you show her the beans?

[-] Ddhuud@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

She wanted him to spill the beans. We don't do that here.

[-] Flughoernchen@feddit.de 5 points 1 year ago

I bet she's gonna change her mind once the apps are more mature

[-] ipkpjersi@lemmy.one 5 points 1 year ago

She's kinda right. It is less straightforward. I like it tho.

[-] Strangian@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

What app is she using to browse it? Wefwef and Memmy both seem pretty user friendly

[-] andrew@lemmy.stuart.fun 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

At the moment, she's only signed up on our self hosted instance and installed Jerboa. Getting her to try setting up an app is the first part of the battle.

[-] Sylocule@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

Tell her to try Memmy for Lemmy. It’s very good. Based on Apollo which I used for years.

[-] andrew@lemmy.stuart.fun 1 points 1 year ago

We're on Android, so I'm currently on Jerboa and trying to get her to try it. But she always uses the mobile web site and opens 10,000 tabs to browse one at a time.

Basically she wants a client with a reading list feature, I think.

[-] spaysi@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Could always try wefwef - I’ve been using the web app and it’s lovely! You just go to wefwef.app to access it, and there’s a place in settings where it walks you through how to set up a Home Screen icon so it works like a regular app. It’s very similar to Apollo as well :)

Hope you & your partner have fun with Lemmy! I am so far, trying to convince my other half to join up as well, haha 😛

[-] Sylocule@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago
[-] andrew@lemmy.stuart.fun 1 points 1 year ago

Good to know! Looks like the Android half might require a bit more DIY investment (not on the play store yet) so I'll have to look into that.

[-] Sylocule@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, it’s on TestFlight on iOS (effectively testing only). But it’s stable for me and the developer is fixing reported issues pretty quickly

[-] alldreadme@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago
[-] Sylocule@lemmy.one 2 points 1 year ago

Ah. I’m on iOS and was going on the info on GitHub

[-] alldreadme@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, saw a GitHub issue where the dev said it's not planned for now :(

[-] Sylocule@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

Good to know, thanks
