I was shocked when I realized people pronounced it fs-tab lmao

[-] Linguist@lemmy.world 75 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Mentally I say Fs-tab because its filesystem table but if I ever say it out loud its f-stab

[-] JetpackJackson@feddit.de 8 points 6 months ago

Now that's insanity

[-] Empricorn@feddit.nl 3 points 6 months ago

I'm calling the authorities. All of them.

[-] BlackPenguins@lemmy.world 35 points 6 months ago

Oh shit. Does that stand for file system?

[-] Revan343@lemmy.ca 38 points 6 months ago
[-] Empricorn@feddit.nl 4 points 6 months ago

*File System Table-stab

[-] clif@lemmy.world 27 points 6 months ago

I've never heard fs-tab in my life. Always f-stab. Hmmm...

Congrats for being one of today's lucky 10000! Sauce

[-] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 8 points 6 months ago

Was the other way around for me. F-stab just makes no sense.

[-] JetpackJackson@feddit.de 12 points 6 months ago

Idk its just how my brain decided to "chop up" the word if that makes sense

[-] tourist@lemmy.world 8 points 6 months ago
[-] JetpackJackson@feddit.de 3 points 6 months ago

Sure we can put that way lol

[-] Empricorn@feddit.nl 3 points 6 months ago

But it sure is memorable!

[-] mikyopii@programming.dev 103 points 6 months ago

g-unzip?

gun-zip

I used this command way before I used gzip so I didn't put it together.

[-] clif@lemmy.world 47 points 6 months ago

gun-zip just rolls off the tongue better. Two syllables instead of three? Yes, please.

[-] Blaster_M@lemmy.world 10 points 6 months ago

Gun Zip - you literally shoot the gz file and it explodes like a piñata of files all over the dir you gun zipped it in.

[-] Artyom@lemm.ee 80 points 6 months ago

Ah yes, the file stabber, not to be confused with a file system tabulation, which it definitely is not.

[-] 1984@lemmy.today 23 points 6 months ago

File stabber is a good name. :)

[-] rem26_art@fedia.io 65 points 6 months ago

... it never occurred to me that it could be fs tab

[-] gofsckyourself@lemmy.world 55 points 6 months ago

Go fsck yourself

[-] ramius345@sh.itjust.works 39 points 6 months ago

Know what it means. Still call it f stab.

[-] Lobreeze@lemmy.world 32 points 6 months ago

F-stab easier to say and more fun to say

I'll die on this hill

[-] snugglebutt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 6 months ago

I'll defend this hill with you

[-] milicent_bystandr@lemm.ee 7 points 6 months ago

By stabbing

[-] MehBlah@lemmy.world 31 points 6 months ago

It is what its always been. F stab

[-] ichbinjasokreativ@lemmy.world 29 points 6 months ago

Mental outlaw said that and it just stayed in my head ever since. Just like /etc is 'etsy'.

[-] SexualPolytope@lemmy.sdf.org 20 points 6 months ago
[-] OrgunDonor@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago

SQL has always been Skull in my head. I think it is because I hated it when in college and associated it with dying inside.

[-] justme@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 6 months ago

Not sequel?

[-] rob_t_firefly@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago

Though I know it means "et cetera" when reading my brain has always "heard" that word - whether in the context of the word "etc." or the computing /etc - as pronounced "ettick." As in, "you need to edit your ettick f-stab file."

[-] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 4 points 6 months ago

How else would you say /etc ?

[-] bitwaba@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago

It took me a lot longer than I'd like to admit to realize that it was FS Tab.

[-] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 24 points 6 months ago

Shit, just say f-stab and enjoy someone "correcting" you, only to smile and continue to say it that way.

[-] KillingTimeItself@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 6 months ago

f stab is real shit bro

fs tab is for losers.

real men say et-see, not etcetera.

[-] dodos@lemmy.world 14 points 6 months ago

TIL, I had no clue why we call this arbitrary important file a file stab, but fs tab makes sense now. F stab is more fun to say though (but has probably confused more than just me)

[-] palordrolap@kbin.social 12 points 6 months ago

I think I might be the third option: f'ss-tab.

Couldn't tell you where that's from. When I first ran Linux, the year didn't start with a 2.

[-] recapitated@lemmy.world 11 points 6 months ago

This meme fscks

[-] joes@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 6 months ago

it's tune-2fs, right

[-] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 months ago

and before that, get the drive name from the "black kid".
