It was a good game, but being released in 1995 when the next generation was already in stores didn't help it. Same with Vectorman, although that's somehow better remembered.
Ristar was developed from an abandoned concept for what became Sonic, a bunny that could grab things with its ears.

Yeah, a lot of these games I never actually got to finish when I was a tiny child because Sega was really bad with the whole "let's make the difficulty spike up so people can't finish it during one rental" thing.
A lot of these games are waaay more fun to play now because of save states and rewinding.
