Oh, I do understand them. They are mightly disturbed people, usually brainwashed by a extremist religious upbringing. They need help, but they don't know it, and they live in an environment that usually does not see the need for this individual to get help in the first place.
You know what has it in them to accept a whole lot of a homophobes?
