As the title says, I'm ready to fire up a Lemmy server of my own. I have a suitable VPS running Debian 11. I think I can probably make short work of it once I get past this one difficult point. What should I call my Lemmy server? With catchy names out there like "Lemmy.World" and "sh.itjust.works", I really want to come up with something good. Unfortunately after thinking it over for three days now and checking tons of names for availability, I don't feel any closer to deciding on a name. It doesn't help that almost all the dictionary words are sold at premium rates these days, even with a fairly obscure tld. Any name suggestions or techniques for choosing a good name would be appreciated. It probably sounds silly but this part just isn't my strong suit and I'm frustrated that it's holding up the project.

I like you.

The winks domain name looks to have several good tld's available for it. You could use a South Park reference and go for a lemmy.winks domain.

Some examples I saw available:

  • lemmy.winks.rocks
  • lemmy.winks.host
  • lemmy.winks.site
  • lemmy.winks.cloud
  • lemmy.winks.website

Some others I've found (with "lemmy" prepended)

  • lemmy.by.ninja
  • lemmy.without.me
  • lemmy.without.rest
  • lemmy.is.legal
  • lemmy.is.global

Gonna stop there because I don't think that I can top the "is.global" domain.

[-] efreak@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 year ago

.global requires at least 3 characters, unfortunately.

is.legal and by.ninja cost $110/yr, a questionable price for a domain that makes no money. In this case, by.community would probably be better at the same price.

without.rest is available, and only $40/yr. without.me has a $5000+ premium fee, but the following are available for $50/yr or less[^1]:

  • talk.without.chat $40/yr
  • alone.without.company $20/yr
  • yourname.without.social $30/yr
  • alone.without.community $30/yr; community..., yourname...
  • internet.without.network $20/yr
  • life.without.place $15/yr; life
  • play.without.games $20/yr
  • dad.without.mom $40/yr (dating community?)
  • people.without.business, community.without.business $12/yr
  • life.without.money $40/yr
  • old.without.family, no.life.without.family $20/yr
  • play.without.toys $40/yr
  • life.without.reviews $20/yr
  • fools.without.cool $30/yr; school..., tool...
  • face,body.without.skin; living,alien.inyour.skin $15/yr; run a horror community?
  • girl.without.cam $20/yr 😏
  • backdoor.mom $40/yr
  • network.without.domains $30/yr
  • website.without.graphics $20/yr
  • website.without.pictures $12/yr
  • work.without.holiday $50/yr
  • art.without.supplies $20/yr
  • life.without.luxury $40/yr
  • work.without.vacations $30/yr
  • genius.without.degree $40/yr
  • dumb.without.news $30/yr
  • federated.love, raining.singles $30/yr
  • federated.club $14+$18/yr
  • federated.site $20/yr
  • federated.gallery, federated.graphics $20/yr; image hosting (anfora, pixelfed)
  • federated.pictures $11/yr, ☝️
  • fake.photography $20/yr, Photoshop competitions
  • forgery.fun, forgery.pro $20/yr, just sounds fun
  • counterfeit.tech $40/yr
  • its.raining.ninja $19/yr
  • snails.forsale $30/yr; probably a lot of weird .forsale available
  • yourname.eating.rocks $13/yr
  • backdoor.icu $18/yr
  • backdoor.dad $15/yr
  • backdoor.lawyer $40/yr
  • up.inyour.business $12/yr

[^1]: Some of these might be first-year-only offers, I didn't check. I was just finishing this list when I realized that Google Domains is probably only showing the premium prices for some registrars (it's also being inconsistent about the price of without.me), so some of them might also have an extra fee (backdoor.icu is shown as premium, but doesn't say what the fee is)

I tried searching loser and Google domains is giving me suggestions for loserbeck.*

community.without.business is a good fit.

[-] key@lemmy.keychat.org 5 points 1 year ago

How is backdoor.mom not a porn site?

[-] efreak@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 year ago

backdoor.dad costs less

[-] EndOfLine@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Likewise, the "forme" domain name has some good tld's available.

The person who buys lem.my and runs a server on it becomes the king of Lemmy

What about: Lemmy.wehavebeans?

[-] SmashingSquid@notyour.rodeo 6 points 1 year ago

I just went through the list of catchy tlds to find one that wasnt $30+ when renewal came up and then went with whatever short domain I could come up with.

[-] TrinityTek@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

And yes, definitely watch those renewal costs. There are some domains that look like a great deal right now with the introductory deals, like .host, but be ready to pay $85 per year at renewal time!

[-] SmashingSquid@notyour.rodeo 4 points 1 year ago

.movie is $215/yr 😱

[-] TrinityTek@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

That has been my approach so far but I think it's getting pretty picked through. :)

[-] J_C___@lemmy.place 6 points 1 year ago

Honestly I just typed Lemmy into Namecheap and saw what TLDs were available

[-] Enasni@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I’m in no way capable of giving you advice as I’m very new to Lemmy but aren’t domain names kinda related to the goal of their “content”?

If your goal is to create a “kitchen sink” sorta thing aimed more toward your own interests then why not use your username? As in: trinity.tek

I think it kinda works honestly but again, I have no skin in this game.

[-] TrinityTek@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately the closest thing is trinity.tech and it's been in use since 2007. If it were available they'd probably charge me a premium rate for it too. Single dictionary words are generally more expensive. I'm kind of being a choosing beggar I guess but I really want a catchy domain name cheap.

[-] ericjmorey@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

TrinityTek.social

trinitytek.dev

[-] muddybulldog@mylemmy.win 3 points 1 year ago

TrinityTek.win is available. $3.16/yr through Cloudflare. Probably a buck or so more through others.

[-] Enasni@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Dang, that’s too bad. Good luck to you!

[-] End0fLine@startrek.website 4 points 1 year ago

Coming up with a domain name that I am happy with is an impossible task. I usually accept one I find "good enough" otherwise I end up in your situation three days later. I completely understand your frustration!

I snagged lemmyw.ink to roll one soon. Lemmiw.ink, too, for good measure.

I was very tickled with myself.

[-] Aidan@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

That’s how we got a generation of products with made up names like “Twitter” and “Google.” Just mash some words together until you get a word that sounds good. Like…. Trone. Trone.pro is $3/yr on Namecheap. My finders fee is astronomical, though

[-] terribleplan@lemmy.nrd.li 3 points 1 year ago

What could you possibly need a tripod phone for?

[-] SheeEttin@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Taking pictures

[-] ericjmorey@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Google was an accidental misspelling of googol

[-] immibis@social.immibis.com 3 points 1 year ago
[-] hitagi@ani.social 2 points 1 year ago

Is it for a general instance or perhaps a specific niche/topic? Either way, anything short and simple is enough. Most people don't like typing long addresses.

[-] TrinityTek@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

What do you think of fdr8.us? Then I could do some subdomains off of it like lemmy.fdr8.us and mastodon.fdr8.us.

[-] ericjmorey@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I like it. You could make that work.

[-] TrinityTek@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Thanks for the feedback! After days of thinking about it and checking availability it was the best I had come up with so I just went for it. Those urls should work soon if all goes according to plan.

Do .us domains still have a strict locality-based naming scheme? Or did they end that policy?

[-] TrinityTek@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

The policy still exists. I am located in California and had to attest to where I am from and how I intend to use the domain.

[-] TrinityTek@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I'm thinking general instance, but I don't want a bunch of right wing or religious stuff so I will have some ground rules.

[-] howdy@thesimplecorner.org 2 points 1 year ago

I just kept it simple

[-] HubertManne@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

domain.name

[-] stown@sedd.it 2 points 1 year ago

seent.online

[-] irdc@derp.foo 2 points 1 year ago

Well, irdc stands for “I really don’t care”, and I guess “derp” and “foo” speak for themselves…in the long run it doesn’t really matter.

[-] Toribor@corndog.uk 2 points 1 year ago

I picked a domain by trying to figure out which top level domains were cheap and then just seeing what stupid stuff was available.

[-] TrinityTek@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Mastodon.fdr8.us is now live. Lemmy.fdr8.us coming soon!
