Image is of container ships waiting outside the canal. While there is usually some number of ships waiting for passage, the number has increased significantly lately.

In order to move ships through the Panama Canal, water is needed to fill the locks. The water comes from freshwater lakes, which are replenished by rainfall. This rainfall hasn't been coming, and Lake Gatun, the largest one, is at near record low levels.

Hundreds of ships are now in a maritime traffic jam, unable to cross the canal quickly. Panama is attempting to conserve water and have reduced the number of transits by 20% per day, among other measures. The Canal's adminstrators have warned that these drought conditions will remain for at least 10 months.

It is unlikely that global supply chains will be catastrophically affected, at least this year. Costs may increase for consumers in the coming months, especially for Christmas, but by and large goods will continue to flow, around South America if need be. Nonetheless, projecting trends over the coming years and decades, you can imagine how this is yet another nudge by climate change towards dramatic economic, environmental, and political impacts on the world at large. It also might prompt discussions inside various governments about nearshoring, and the general vulnerability of global supply chains - especially as the United States tries, bafflingly, to go to war with China.

After some discussion in the last megathread about building knowledge of geopolitics, some of us thought it might be an interesting idea to have a Country of the Week - essentially, I/we choose a country and then people can come in here and chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants, related to that country. More detail in this comment.

Here is the map of the Ukraine conflict, courtesy of Wikipedia.

Okay, look, I got a little carried away. Monday's update usually covers the preceding Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, but I went ahead and did all of last week. If people like a more weekly structure then I might try that instead, if not, then I'll go back to the Mon-Wed-Fri schedule.

Links and Stuff

The bulletins site is down.

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists

Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Add to the above list if you can.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Almost every Western media outlet.

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Last week's discussion post.

So XBOX is moribund, right? Starfield seems mediocre, definitely not the Skyrim level hit they were expecting. The game was clearly focus grouped to death, not a single memorable thing in my 20 hours.

PS5 sales, 50 million

Xbox Series X sales, 5 million

Xbox Series S sales, 15 million (combined 20 mill)

Series S is having performance problems with Baldur's Gate 3. Bethesda was 7.5 billion.

Everyone I know that was excited for Starfield payed for 1 month of game pass for it lol. So that would take like 750 million people buying a month of game pass to be worth it?

I don't think there are even enough Xbox Series consoles to recuperate that price. Elder Scrolls is like half a decade away. If the decline in quality between Skyrim > Elder Scrolls VI is as severe as New Vegas > 4 > 76 > Starfield Xbox might be dead before they can take any advantage of the $60,000,000,000 Activision/Call of Duty purchase.

So apparently there are rumors India will change it's name to Bharat because Modi used it during the G20 summit

[-] jackmarxist@hexbear.net 32 points 1 year ago

Bharat is already an official alternative name for India according to the constitution. They might start using It as the primary one in various areas because it appeals to the Hindi belt because of elections but overall I doubt they'll change it completely.

I did an effort post about Syria's ba3th until 1970 in the replies to my other comment about Libya, if you are interested, check it out if you want: https://hexbear.net/comment/3914654

I have found an interesting book on Libya: Everyday Politics in the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya ("Libyan Arab Jamahiriya" being, of course, what Qaddafi referred to the country that we currently know as Libya). Well, to be more accurate, I put it on my reading list a little while ago and remembered a few hours ago. I'm unsure if it has bad brainworms in it so this isn't an full recommendation (yet), but given I knew only scant bits and pieces about Libya, this is as good a place as any to start reading about it. Only a little over 200 pages of actual writing and it's not small text, so I expect it'll only take me this week to get through.

I watched (U.S.) Navy cadets running today (in a public area) and one of their march-chant couplets ended with "go to Iran."

[Germany] The right wing magazine Focus claims Sahra Wagenknecht has decided to split from the left party and found her own thing after the Hessian and Bavarian election.

Great, a PatSoc party with mass appeal and willing to work with the fascists.

As for DIE LINKE, it's dead. Now the libs in the party leadership will have free reign to do whatever they want and election results like below 1% in Bavaria as I'm fearing are just gonna mean loss of manpower, money, infrastructure, funding to leftist projects via think tanks etc.

The french left keeps me in near constant despair, LFI (big left party) after keeping a fucking domestic abuser in their ranks, have found nothing better to do than hound one of the rugby players of our national team 3 days before the world cup scheduled start for a racist remark said to another player 5 years ago. The player was disciplined and clearly changed for the better so this is utterly irrelevant, has made many people very angry and, since Rugby is a massively popular sport here and lots of workers play it, LFI have lost even more credit, somehow, amongst workers. As many here have said, the most important thing is to win labor victories, so this is just really bad timing, and bad PR imo. i really dont know how to feel about this, the next election cycle is about to begin and the biggest left party in france is engaging in stupid shit like this, i really dont understand. ALSO WHY THE FUCK DID THEY KEEP THE GUY WHO BEAT HIS WIFE

Puebla Group Warns About the Danger of a Coup in Guatemala

"The pretense of appointing an interim president by Congress would imply a clear denial of the Constitution," the Puebla Group emphasized.

On Monday, several Ibero-American former presidents gathered in the Puebla Group denounced the "lawfare" that is underway against Bernardo Arevalo, the elected president of Guatemala.

"We warn of the danger of a coup d'état in process. We call on the international community to support a peaceful and legal transition that allows authorities elected by the people to access the government, which would be a definitive step to ensure democratic continuity and recover the rule of law in Guatemala," the Puebla Group said in a statement signed by former presidents such as Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero (Spain), Ernesto Samper (Colombia) and Rafael Correa (Ecuador).

"During the electoral process, there have been various attempts to delegitimize the winning candidacy and the Semilla party through threats to the lives of the leaders, illegal raids on their campaign headquarters, and announcements of arbitrary arrests."

The Puebla Group denounced other actions against the Seed Party, such as the invalidation of the election of its leftist bank and the requests for new elections so that Congress can appoint a "provisional governor", which would be a way of ignoring the results of the elections. presidential elections and maintain chaos in

"There is no constitutional cause to annul the elections," the Latin American Council for Justice and Democracy (CLAJUD) said, adding that criminal judges cannot attribute to themselves functions that the Constitution gives to the Supreme Electoral Tribunal.

"The pretense of appointing an interim president by Congress would imply a clear denial of the Constitution and the will of the people expressed in the last elections in favor of President Bernardo Arevalo," the Puebla Group emphasized.

For this reason, these Ibero-American progressive intellectuals and politicians emphatically requested Guatemalan authorities to make the results of the elections official by investing Arevalo as president and canceling the decision to outlaw the Semilla party.

"We denounce the systematic judicialization of the electoral process, which occurs amid a total loss of institutionality caused by right-wing politicians that have been mired in corruption and allowed the advance of organized crime in the country."

Mexico: Claudia Sheinbaum to Be MORENA Presidential Candidate

She has a PhD in physics and studied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

After winning a selection process conducted through polls on Wednesday, Claudia Sheinbaum, the former governor of Mexico City, will be the presidential candidate for the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) party for the 2024 elections.

Alfonso Durazo, the president of the MORENA's National Council, read the results of the five polls that defined the presidential candidacy for this leftist political group.

"The comprehensive analysis of these data allows us to unquestionably conclude that Claudia Sheinbaum obtained the best position to be considered as coordinator of the defense committees of the Fourth Transformation", he said.

Once the results were announced, Sheinbaum declared that she will hold a meeting with the MORENA leadership on Thursday because "the electoral process begins and there is not a minute to lose."

Given that there are no primary elections in Mexico, the selection of Sheinbaum constitutes an unprecedented democratic process, which was carried out by MORENA and its political allies, the Labor Party and the Green Ecologist Party.

Born in 1962, Sheinbaum is a fervent defender of Mexico's “Fourth Transformation”, the political project promoted by the President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO).

“Mexico is ready for a female president or astronaut. We Mexican women have been ready for a long time,” said Sheinbaum, who has a PhD in physics and studied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

Her political career began in the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), which sponsored AMLO's presidential candidacy twice. In 2000, Sheinbaum was part of Lopez Obrador's cabinet when he was governor of the Federal District.

Morocco's deadliest earthquake in decades claims more than 1,000 lives

Morocco's geophysical center reported that the earthquake occurred in the Ighil region of the High Atlas mountains, reporting a magnitude of 7.2. The US Geological Survey reported that a 6.8-magnitude quake struck a mountainous area 72 kilometers (45 miles) southwest of tourist hotspot Marrakesh at 11:11 pm (2211 GMT) on Friday.

The World Health Organization said the earthquake affected more than 300,000 people in Marrakesh and its suburbs. Updated Interior Ministry figures on Saturday showed the quake claimed the lives of at least 1,037 people, the vast majority in al-Haouz, the epicenter and Taroudant provinces. Another 1,204 people were injured, including 721 in critical condition, the Ministry added.
