reminds me of the headcannon where the reason that everyone uses PADDS and replicators so poorly (not sending each other documents, placing orders that taste poorly) is that everyone in starfleet does not know how to use computers.
In my mind there is no actual science or research or invention done in the Federation anymore, except at one facility. Here they put shit inside of tachyon fields and reverse polarities while screaming dramatically at each other and take notes on what new shit comes out of that.
