I feel like nobody here read the actual article.

But I agree, it’s a ridiculous product with no use case.

I feel like nobody here read the actual article.

I agree. Most people are acting like they are killing off the whole product line (of which there is only one product currently). However, the article clearly states that a second generation product is in the works.

It's worse than reddit was I swear

[-] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 8 points 11 hours ago

Absolutely. The 'hive mind' here is so narrow minded and shallow that it's super easy to predict 3/4 of the comments on any given article. Probably because the all the comments are from the same 5 people.

I think about people on reddit complaining about reposts as I scroll past 50 posts of the same article posted to different instances by the same person.

It does however mean they are not concerned about selling out of current stock any time soon.

[-] dinckelman@lemmy.world 18 points 22 hours ago

This could have been an absolutely insane product, if they sold it without all the useless bullshit like the facial passthrough, at a decent price. As it is, especially given how fragile it is, it's just a toy at best.

It's basically taken the exact opposite route of something like the Xbox Kinect, which turned from a toy into something people use in science

[-] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 9 points 20 hours ago

How they can justify that price for a headset with no third strap is beyond me. If I’m paying three grand for a headset, it had better feel like nothing is on my face.

[-] Dark_Arc@social.packetloss.gg 3 points 17 hours ago

I really don't think head sets will ever be absolutely insane products.

Lots of people just don't want to strap a display to their face.

[-] TexMexBazooka@lemm.ee 4 points 16 hours ago

I can see a good use case if they make a decently functional lightweight headset that can replace multiple monitors, particularly for traveling

[-] Dark_Arc@social.packetloss.gg 1 points 15 hours ago

Maybe for traveling. However, how many people really are going to buy an expensive electronic device for a few hours on a plane?

That's a pretty "upper class" luxury at best. Then, there's nobody developing apps for it outside of a few streaming providers (maybe).

Also, I work with multiple monitors all day and play games on those monitors at night, but I still appreciate that I can look away from the content and just "get up and get a drink" or look out the window and watch the birds outside of my office at the feeder.

Also think about all this effort people put in to try and reduce their screen time... A VR headset is the antithesis of that objective.

[-] TexMexBazooka@lemm.ee 3 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

My specific use case is an IT professional that needs a lot of screen real estate but would prefer to live a more nomadic lifestyle. I’ve been toting portable monitors for a while and it works OK, but if something like this negates the need to do that it’d be awesome.

That’s why I’m saying it’s a niche product, but the thing is they aren’t marketing it as anything else, and the price is ultimately pretty reasonable for brand new tech.

Edit: ima stupid. The “it” I’m referring to here isn’t the apple vision pro, that’s dumbassery. I’m referring to another headset called visor that will start shipping next year. In theory.

They might be cool for gaming at least. Or porn.

[-] fl42v@lemmy.ml 3 points 14 hours ago

Idk, vr porn is creepy af. Or at least it used to be 5 yrs ago or so... Imagine a girl so huge one her tit bigger than your head, for example. So, yeah, I noped out pretty much instantly

[-] tee9000@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

Is facial passthrough like face identification or just passthrough?

[-] dinckelman@lemmy.world 3 points 14 hours ago

Your eyes on the front display is what i mean. Passthrough for your own vision is awesome

[-] tee9000@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

Oh okay. I was like... passthrough is a major part of the product lol.

[-] fl42v@lemmy.ml 0 points 14 hours ago

Now that's not creepy at all

[-] interurbain1er@sh.itjust.works 10 points 22 hours ago

Well, they forgot that hardware needs an actual purpose once you're done with the market of people who purchase any new overpriced gadget to use as status symbol.

Setting timers for eggs and pasta isn't one.

[-] just_another_person@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago

If they had just sold a unit that was a virtual desktop display, it could have been a useful product that people wanted to use.

Instead, this bloated useless thing...bleh.

[-] TexMexBazooka@lemm.ee 3 points 20 hours ago

Well boy have I got something for you to look into

Visor.com

[-] interurbain1er@sh.itjust.works 1 points 18 hours ago
[-] TexMexBazooka@lemm.ee 2 points 16 hours ago

Normally I would agree, but the company developing the hardware are the guys that make immersed, which is the desktop integration software all the other VR headsets on the market are using. So if anyone is gonna make anything decent, maybe it’ll be them?

It seems good in theory, and comes in at like a quarter of the cost of apple’s monstrosity.

It’s also pretty niche, targeted at professionals who would use it to enhance their workspace than gaming.

[-] tee9000@lemmy.world -4 points 15 hours ago

Aw. A cute little comment that fits nicely with the article headline.

Thanks for saving me time by giving your summarized dissection of the article and the implications it has for apples product.

Oh and btw all tech products stop production at some point, because you know, apple isnt a dumbass that pumps out products without regard for demand as they are creating a successive model of the product.

Stop scrolling. Start thinking.
