Met him a few years ago, he is a super nice human being

If I remember correctly he didn't have any family to take the picture with so he took it with his two dogs and got that great shot

he didn’t have any family to take the picture with

Why not? That's really sad!

Because sometimes people don't find a partner or are in between relationships. Not really sad per se, whereas someone can also be miserable while married with children (yo Al Bundy :)

Edit: Ed -> Al, my bad - I watched like every episode of that and STILL got it wrong :(

Yeah, to be an astronaut you usually need to be a fighter pilot with a difficult degree like engineering or medicine. That doesn’t leave much time for a family unless you’re Buzz Aldrin who managed to do all that and still find time to cheat

Astronaut Scott Parazysnki had a family, was a doctor, did stuff like climbing Everest. He also wrote a book, which makes it very clear the type of ego that lets you “balance” all that.

That would play less of a role I'd say. Pilot licenses are maybe a thing for half the international astronaut corps, maybe even a bit less - but those typically come from a military career, in younger years. An scientific or medicine degree doesn't take all that much time, unless you're me and really enjoy your time as a university student :D

Yeah, but what about parents? Brothers or sisters? Aunts, uncles, cousins... etc.

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Sometimes life is tragic and painful. I’m extremely lucky to still have a sister, aunt, and grandma after losing my parents. But for many folks who don’t have such family even if you have cousins you might choose your dogs first. Like I love my cousins, but our lives are in very different places

Hence my saying it's sad that he doesn't have the family to be in the picture with him. It's nice that he did it with the dogs, it's just also sad that he couldn't do it with dogs and family.

That picture is a man showing off getting to be what every kid wants to be: not only an astronaut but one with two happy dogs. Absolute legend.

What does he mean by "the shot"? Wanting to be an astronaut?

[-] NotSpez@lemm.ee 28 points 1 year ago

I think ‘the shot’ means ‘the picture’ in this context

[-] WhoRoger@lemmy.world -3 points 1 year ago

Yes that is definitely it. Getting the perfect "shot" is standard in the english language for taking a picture.
