While for the most part this kind of damage is fine (this game is playable), it's questionable for how much longer. If you have the hardware or the capability, always remember to back up your physical games.

Fuck... They all have a hole! It's right in the center!

Man, I remember when I bought a used copy of FF7 because I didn't have it anymore, get through all of disc 1 only to find disc 2 had label damage (holes through the medium like the OP) and it wouldn't load. You know how long it takes to get through the first disc of that game playing casually? 😩

25-35 hours. I'm about to cross the temple of the ancients.

In my opinion, it's acceptable to possess a ROM in this situation. Just remember up use a VPN for protection.

Took me a good 5 seconds of thinking this was a fantastic shitpost before I saw what OP meant, good post

One of my parks a rec discs had a scratch on the data layer (“hole”).

Sent a pic and info the Universal and they mailed us a replacement set.

Most studios have an email address for this kind of stuff. Hunt around.

This is a game from 2007, I doubt there are new/replacement discs. That said it appears to be functional so we'll see.

Send the disc to activision and tell them you need a replacement for this damaged disc. Just to see how it plays out at least.

[-] the16bitgamer@programming.dev 5 points 1 year ago

The worst that can happen is they don't return the disk

Oh damn, I just checked and found a massive hole on every physical disc I own...

Had a tiny spot right besides the center on a PS3 Simpsons game disc. The PS3 wouldn’t even recognize the game.

You may have been unlucky to get the DRM corrupt.

A lot of my old cd collection looks like this now or worse lol

I know it may not be the most legal conversation, but how best can one back up physical games? It has been a long, long time since I last looked into it.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 year ago

That's perfectly legal. Sharing them isn't.

Homebrew and backing up your legally owned software. They're usually called dumping tools.

[-] Katana314@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I salute people for devoting themselves to these. But since you also have to buy the tools, in my case, laziness causes me to buy digital sales; knowing I still roll some dice on the game not working some day for other reasons.

PS2/PS1 throw it into a DVD player Ron a PC and rip it.

PS3 you'd need to homebrew it. Same process to get the files ready to play on RCPS3

Disc rot is a serious problem for cds, is this just someone damaged the disc?

[-] mariusafa@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 year ago

Can you backup DRM bullshit blueray?

[-] the16bitgamer@programming.dev 1 points 1 year ago

BluRay is just a data format. PS3 games are just encrypted, which means with a modded PS3 you can back it up.

Same process in order to play it on RCPS3
