I guess the press in the USSR was also capitalist controlled because the propaganda there was so blatantly false people made fun of it constantly.

Lenin really didn't get how a vanguard party is just another form of bourgeoisie power.

well, the USSR was state capitalism masquerading as Communism.

Didn't the USSR start out with planned economy and switch to state capitalism after Stalin? I can't recall rn though it was definitely a planned economy at some point. It wasn't ever socialist though.

Everything belongs to the people, and as an avatar of the people's collective will... everything belongs to me.

So what's the alternative? State controlled media? Because that's never used to push narratives and agendas.

The more voices the better. State run, private, individual. Break up large conglomerates like Sinclair. Reintroduce fairness doctrine.

I don't get how the fairness doctrine ever was able to be removed

Regulation on businesses and corporate spend.

You can have free press if you limit who can influence it. From both corporations and the state.

Prevent monopolies and the consolidation of news media. Promote dissenting opinions. Promote smaller news organizations and promote discussion.

That's the elephant in the room that communists always conveniently overlook.

"There never was real communism/socialism! We need to really move the means of production" - yeah and who will organize it? Who will ensure the organizers won't just take it themselves? Because that's what happened in every attempt.

So let's just not have free press then. Got it.

This was a bad argument then and it's a bad argument now.

Either a publication can be trusted or it can't.

The difference is that a government that stands in the middle of free press inherently makes it impossible to trust that press. The only thing a government can and should do is provide a safe (free of the fear of the loss of life, privilege or property) area for people to engage in discussion. People seeking honesty will have to rigorously find it or have the ability to choose who they allow to find it on their behalf.

Capitalists will absolutely try to muddy the waters and people must be prepared for it.

In India, the media controlled by the corporates is the literal subliminal propaganda machinery for the government.
