Summary

Donald Trump and congressional Republicans are preparing to crack down on pro-Palestinian protesters.

Measures could include deporting foreign students advocating for Hamas, prosecuting protest leaders for failing to register as foreign agents, and applying anti-terrorism or hate speech laws.

Critics, including civil rights groups like the ACLU and CCR, warn this could criminalize protected speech.

Legal battles are expected, especially as groups like the Heritage Foundation push initiatives like Project Esther to target alleged Hamas supporters.

Campus protests and student visa revocations are likely focal points for enforcement.

When they lay the ground work for these things to happen, yes

[-] mlg@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Ah yes let's crack down on the already cracked down student protests where we already repeatedly sent riot police multiple times to beat and arrest students.

Thanks Biden

Time to return to the old school classic of occupying jails with free speech fights.

"May".

Articles like this are purely speculative and don't really serve any useful purpose. Yes, Trump will probably do a bunch of nasty things, but guessing what they will be isn't all that helpful. If anything, public conversations around this will only give them more ideas.

It's an election year... Should we help Palestine by protesting

A - the party that acts as a partial if somewhat ineffective check on right wing Israeli policy, OR

B - the guy who has an Israeli settlement named after him for building an embassy in East Jerusalem (and will possibly have us rounded up and sent to camps, if he becomes president)

Aren't the elections over? Whatever "strategic" excuse for supporting Biden/Harris is gone now. It's a bi-partisan policy of unconditional support for Israel.

It's true Trump will be more extreme, but there is no longer any excuse for going easy on Biden/Harris, if there ever was.

The shamelessness of the far left, who continued to double down after sabotaging the American electorate and the future, quite possibly, of global stability... Quite frankly, is astonishing to me.

Okay I get you're mad about the election results but Biden was not acting as a check on anything.

[-] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 year ago

Also, there has already been plenty of crackdowns on pro-palestine protestors.

[-] K1nsey6@lemmy.ml -2 points 1 year ago

They won't be concerned about those crackdowns until a Republican is doing it.

[-] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Weird phrasing, unless maybe you're happy about the election results.

Democrats sanctioned far right Israeli leaders, limiting their ability to cause havoc in the West Bank. They also brought in literal tons of direct aid to Gaza, where armed groups have made it notoriously difficult to bring in and distribute aid.

I'm... Not? I just don't try to kid myself about the Democrats being anything other than enthusiastic participants in Netanyahu's genocide. Which the GOP also are you don't need to tell me that.

Democrats sanctioned far right Israeli leaders, limiting their ability to cause havoc in the West Bank.

Sanctioning individual has no effect on literally anything.

They also brought in literal tons of direct aid to Gaza, where armed groups have made it notoriously difficult to bring in and distribute aid.

Okay how does that contradict what I said?

[-] pete_link@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

That statement is truly incredible! Biden helped give cover to Netanyahu (in addition to endless supplies of bombs) and drew one tiny red line for a few weeks (no bunker-busters in Rafah) and that faded quickly. He stopped funding UNWRA, even when other Western countries resumed it. Continuous support for Israel in the UN Security Council.

The West Bank example is grotesque. What effect did those sanctions have? None that I can see. The IDF has begun destroying infrastructure like they have done in Gaza, in addition to all of the killings.

So no, there is no reason to defend Biden/Harris. Is Trump worse? Yes, so what about it? Should we refrain from protesting because Democrats are in power right now?

[-] K1nsey6@lemmy.ml -2 points 1 year ago

Sanctions didn't do shit while Biden continued sending unlimited weapons and money. Sanctions are performative.

Hmm but I was told that Harris wouldn't check every box on my list. How can I possibly make a thoughtful decision between not getting everything I wanted and getting nothing?

/S

Edit: what is this I see through this thread? Users downplaying how Democrats are different from Republicans in a post about how Republicans are gonna be worse than Democrats?

My, I might start to think that's a bad angle...

[-] Mickey7@lemmy.world -1 points 1 year ago

Nothing wrong with pro-Palestinian protesters unless they are not aimed at the Israeli government but instead are simply anti semitic and condemn all Jews. There is a difference between a government and people who just happen to be Jewish

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 year ago

And I have complete trust that the Trump administration will carefully and fairly consider this distinction.
