Many defendants arrived at the hearing with their bags packed ready for prison. One of them was in tears as he hugged his companion before entering the courtroom.

Aww, boo fucking hoo. 🖕🏾

[-] underwire212@lemm.ee 0 points 1 year ago

You can bring a bag to prison??

[-] Damage@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 year ago

European prisons are different from American ones because they weren't modeled after slave pens

At 72 it's probably a life sentence.

[-] Frog@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 year ago

Eligible for probation at 13 years and 4 months. I hope he suffers.

They should've thrown out the maximum years for a case like this. They should've thrown out parole eligibility too.

If you can throw it out for one case you can throw it out for every case.

Unlike the US, most countries in the EU - including France - have a justice system that is not attempting to maximize recidivism, which is why maximum sentences exist for every crime except murder.

Furthermore, at least in Germany the constitutional court ruled that life sentences without the eligibility of parole violate human dignity as such sentences would take away all hope from prisoners which significantly harms them. I wouldn't be surprised if France had similar rulings.

For him? Probably yes. But what about the other 50 assholes?

"okay but women not wanting to date men is just overreacting" - a sentiment we see even here on fucking Lemmy.

Fifty different men. He also trained these men how to rape their wives.

“okay but women not wanting to date men is just overreacting” - a sentiment we see even here on fucking Lemmy.

We've dodged a lot of the usual garbage from Reddit over here, but that one definitely stuck around. The only negative comments I've received on any of my lemmy accounts are guys furious when you point out men are more violent partners. Like they just cannot admit that as a society the 'boys will be boys' mentality was used to allow a lot of awful behaviours like rape. Hell, Revenge of The Nerds has a rape scene in it and people only recently started to speak out against it.

So, sorry for the downvotes, but at least we all know it's a bunch of insecure men. Maybe they'll learn, maybe they won't, but you have allies here in the mean time.

I was thinking it really wasn't that bad on here as you described, but I just read some other comments under this post and I was dead wrong. Disappointing.

Y'all ever notice how much male sexuality is performative for the benefit of other men? I'm not saying that they're gay, they just seem more motivated by peer approval and status than touching a girl.

I recently saw an interview with a stripper who said that the dudes who wanted attention from the girls used $100 bills and were discrete, while the dudes who tossed 100 $1 bills were more interested in the attention of their buddies.

There's a weird thing with "conquest", pulling the ladies, and being somewhat deviant that's tied to manliness and straightness for some reason.

[-] kandoh@reddthat.com 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Another interesting thing, in that same vein, is asexual or lesbian women that just go along with being in heterosexual relationships with men because it's 'normal' or convenient.

[-] Rookwood@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 1 year ago

Extrapolating this incident to male sexuality at large is idiotic.

[-] Shou@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

The guy is right though. Testosterone peaks as a result of social circumstances.

[-] Rookwood@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Nothing about testosterone makes you sadistically drug and sexually exploit your wife for decades.

[-] Shou@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

It does decrease sensitivity to consequences and decrease empathy. It also results in dominance seeking behaviour. It's why what happened to the victim, is done more often by men than women.

"Hurr durr, everyone I don't like is a closet homosexual."

Well, they should stop being republican, then.

[-] betahack@lemmy.world 22 points 1 year ago

seems way toooo lite a sentence

[-] WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 year ago

For him, it will be life.

It's the maximum sentence in france, I believe.

[-] frayedpickles@lemmy.cafe 3 points 1 year ago

20 years is oz of pot numbers

[-] ghost_towels@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

Her face in that thumbnail, so happy, and I think a bit at peace too. True complete peace with the horror that she’s faced will be a long time coming, but she’s channeled that immediate rage into justice. And started a larger movement to combat the ingrained misogyny in their (ours?) culture. It’s way too short a sentence for him, but he probably won’t make it out alive.

[-] CommanderCloon@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

It's the maximum legal sentence, and 20 years is absolutely no joke

[-] kreskin@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

A real shame. With that many assaults, it really should have been a longer sentence.

[-] Mariemarion@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

He got the maximum sentence.

[-] kreskin@lemmy.world -1 points 1 year ago

depends on if they had chosen to sentence him for 51 crimes or one crime with 51 incidences. They should have sentenced the husband to 51x20 years, or 1020 years in prison.

[-] CommanderCloon@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

That's not how it works in France at all. You get prosecuted on all charges, but only condemned for the most grievous offense. So for a murder+assault+trespassing case, if found guilty of all charges, your sentence would only be for murder.

As all condemnation it takes context into account, like the assault + trespassing, but if there were limits on murder sentences then you'd only be sentence-able to that crime's legal sentencing limits (there are none for murder, which is the only crime that has no sentencing limits).

Looked it up: "French sentencing law generally forbids consecutive sentencing"

Today I learned. My bad, thanks.
