On boxing day we thought it was simple gastroenteritis, but she quickly deteriorated despite veterinary intervention. Scans showed nodules in her liver and a large number of lesions in her bowels, almost certainly cancer, but its effects had left her too weak to deal with the trauma of any operation that could have helped. We chose to put her down rather than make her live her remaining few weeks in pain and misery.
All dogs are the best dog, but she was far and away better than any other dog I've owned, patient, loving, and obedient to a fault. She loved a good life, full of runs, sticks, cuddles, and naps.
You will be sorely missed, Nell.

Sorry for your loss comrade. I know how hard it is having lost my pet partner just last month. Nell seems like a wonderful dog and she looks beautiful.

If you need some guidance or reassurance I found this book helped Coping with Sorrow on the Loss of Your Pet, by Moira, Anderson Allen.

Likewise - when I saw your post about Mr Softie reminded me that Nell was getting old, and I'd soon be feeling the same way, but this was much more sudden than I expected. They will both be missed by many.

Always tragic when it's a sudden loss but I'm glad she didn't have to suffer and that you did right by her cuddle

The greater the love that was held in our hearts for those we care for in turn inflicts a greater grief when the time comes for their departure into the eternal dream.

I am truly sorry for your loss.

Rest in power, pretty girl

I empathize with you. My partner had one very similar to yours. She also had to make the tough call just recently, she deteriorated in a space of 2 weeks. She will forever live on in our memories and our hearts.

I’m really sorry to hear this.

This makes me think of my dog, who is very much healthy at the moment but I’m not sure what I could do if he were to get sick. Is there pet insurance and does it even work?

[-] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

You'll regret not having it if they do get sick or injured. Not only will it massively reduce the price of treatment (my greyhound had a £1500 bill after eating a mince pie a few years ago, we only paid £250), but it will make sure you can afford it when you need it most - we would have been pretty fucked by the bill after Nell and I got attacked by a Pitbull if it weren't for having pet insurance.
