No he shouldn't. He should just do nothing. Let Twitter die already. Also those are all so obviously AI generated images lol

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 23 points 2 years ago

I'm sorry, I can't agree that nothing should be done. I would love Twitter to die, but these scams are actively hurting people. They are criminals and must be stopped and Twitter is doing nothing about it, even when Elon himself is used as bait.

The biggest scammer of them all runs Twitter, so don't get your hopes up too high.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

I'm not hopeful at all. If anything, it will get worse.

[-] notsofunnycomment@mander.xyz 2 points 2 years ago

I'm hopeful it will get worse.

[-] mojo@lemm.ee 3 points 2 years ago

Maybe to someone who's online and knows what to spot it is. For a normie, it's good enough to pass off as authentic.

[-] ChrisLicht@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago

You and I wind up subsidizing these scams, as victims can fall into the social safety net.

[-] MargotRobbie@lemmy.world 25 points 2 years ago

Unlike here, where all the celebrities are 100% real, take it from me.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 2 years ago

I loved you in that thing!

[-] MargotRobbie@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

Thank you for loving me in that thing too!

[-] vulgarcynic@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 years ago

Not in that other thing though. So happy you made that thing after it. Soooooo good! You were robbed of that Oscar.

[-] blue_zephyr@lemmy.world 17 points 2 years ago

Elon doesn't have to do anything. People need to leave Twitter.

[-] hayes_@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago

Pet peeve of mine: nothing about this is “ironic.”

If the author really wants an adverb, I’d probably go with “unsurprisingly.”

[-] damnYouSun@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 years ago

They don't know what the word means. They honestly seem to think that the word ironic means slightly funny.

[-] charolastra@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

I think "incidentally" would fit quite well here

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

I bet Elon Musk is wondering if it can be monetized.

[-] ChrisLicht@lemm.ee 3 points 2 years ago

He is monetizing it. That’s one of the article’s main points.

[-] Boiglenoight@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago

Just like Security can’t stop every spam email, Twitter can’t stop every falsehood on its service. Both should try, though. Twitter has metrics and can put a stop to trending tweets that are clearly disinformation.

[-] Jaysyn@kbin.social 5 points 2 years ago

It sure was less of a problem before MElon took over.

[-] dragontamer@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Elon fired that team the moment he bought Twitter.

[-] mojo@lemm.ee 1 points 2 years ago

They had a method of filtering this out before. That's what verification badges were lol. Now it's just a checkmark saying you're a loser who paid to get boosted on social media, and deserve to get bullied for supporting the alt-right.

[-] Boiglenoight@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago
[-] Jaysyn@kbin.social 8 points 2 years ago

He's a sociopath. He won't care until it costs him money.

[-] effingjoe@kbin.social 7 points 2 years ago

Isn't it already costing him money? I find it very hard to believe there hasn't been a dip in ad revenue since all this madness started.

[-] nxfsi@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

I could only imagine what a Bear Grylls scam would look like.

"If you donate one pisscoin to my wallet I'll promise to double it!"

[-] dangblingus@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

He doesn't care. He only bought Twitter with Saudi money so that he could trash it and help prevent another Arab Spring.

[-] Salvo@aussie.zone 4 points 2 years ago

Step 1. Create Mastodon Instance specifically to cater to oppressed people in oppressive regimes.

Step 2. Create bots to emulate dissidents.

Step 3. Sell instance to oppressive regimes for $$$

Step 4. Rinse and Repeat.

[-] MisterMoo@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago

If no one is willing to leave the platform, he doesn’t have to do anything.

[-] MyOpinion@lemm.ee 3 points 2 years ago

Elon is a social media Genius!
