When these things "take over", are they a) causing distress that just makes the host do things it wouldn't normally, b) taking control by producing hormones that alter behaviour, c) physically taking over the body by replacing nerves/muscles with mycelium and overriding anything the host's brain is trying to do, or d) taking over the brain of the host itself?

I'm not sure which option is the worst one. Each sounds just like a different level of "your body isn't yours anymore" hell.

You should read the Children of Time. The second book is something else.

There was a supplementary paper that noted the AGGT gene string was being activated by this fungal process and led to giantism with some individuals reaching the size of dogs. Growth spurts of this sort in spiders studied were accompanied by hyperactivity due to respiratory problems and an insatiable hunger for flesh. Twelve specimens that seemed most prone to these symptoms are being flown to the Huugens Spider research labs in Baltimore for further study. Results are not expected to be immediate due to problems Baltimore is currently having with its security.

Sounds familiar haha

(If I am not wrong this is a Resident Evil reference)

[-] seven_phone@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

No sorry I just made it up, I did play the original Resident Evil back when the world was young but nothing after and have not seen any of the films beyond them just being on in a room I happened in but some cultural reference may have seeped into my head when I wasn't on guard.

Love when the meme-anthropologists dive into yore lore for us

[-] Gigliorananomicom@sh.itjust.works 0 points 4 months ago

I meant the original version of the meme

[-] BananaTrifleViolin@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Can't be swearing on the Internet! I think you mean f***. Possibly even **** or even better fudge. Would hate to upset the Americans! They might impose tariffs.

[-] Gigliorananomicom@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 months ago

What are you even on about?

[-] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

They're joking, referencing the propensity of companies of late to try and sanitize the internet so people have taken to censoring memes and comments like that, even with words that aren't curse words (thus the existence of words like "unalive" and "sewerslide" to reference suicide.) So much so it has creeped in here from their users and stolen memes as well now.

Though "American?" Iirc TikTok started this mess, and American companies are probably hopping on board now but I don't use anything but lemmy and masto so who knows.

Is it Berenstain or Berenstein bears?

[-] superkret@feddit.org 1 points 4 months ago

It's Bierstein Bären, actually.
Just to double-check: Who won WW3 in your timeline?

[-] Rolive@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 4 months ago

Nobody did, WW3 has only losers.

“Fungal zombie spiders“ check almost all the boxes. Just add some demonic black magic, and you’re all set.

[-] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 1 points 4 months ago

Bet this is where the cure for cancer is hiding tho. Feels like a final boss

[-] 11111one11111@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

I mean can a zombie get cancer?

[-] cupcakezealot@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 months ago

Oh great, Australia is spreading

[-] ikidd@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

I saw some of their zombies working the ski hill here. They're all "g'day" and "Have fun!", but I know what they're up to.

[-] Auli@lemmy.ca 0 points 4 months ago

Looks like the last of us fungus.

[-] Venator@lemmy.nz 1 points 4 months ago

The last of us fungus is inspired by the previously discovered one mentioned in the article.

mirroring the behavior of ants infected by fungi of the genus Ophiocordyceps previously reported from the Atlantic rainforest of Brazil

[-] muhyb@programming.dev 1 points 4 months ago

There is a humongous fungus among us.
