Not member yet of any of those community, but I will join the playstation one, I want to just say it's great you keep c/ps5 opens. I seen merger been done much more agressively.

Yeah, The point was not to shut down c/PS5 but instead to have everyone go to PlayStation while the lemmy community is still small. Keep in mind the ps5 community voted for this along with the PlayStation community. Both communities agreed to the merge and this wasn't strictly a mod decision.

We mods have limited bandwidth so this change is mainly a change to where we will be seeding content. As the lemmy community grows, there will be more need for breakout communities like PSX, PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5, etc. But as it stands now, PS5 was the only active community due to us mods diligently seeding content. We were originally unaffiliated with c/PlayStation as the old mods were interested in keeping that for PS4 and backward consoles only. The PS5 community actually predates the PlayStation community. Anyway, now that we are in control of both, we think it's best to focus our efforts on PlayStation, while allowing PS5 to stay open for the community to use.

A lot of people are concerned that PS5 news is going away. This is NOT the case. PS5 news will be a mainstay pillar of the PlayStation community. The same volume of content that you're used to seeing on c/PS5 will be on c/PlayStation now. The change is primarily semantic, but it opens up opportunities for us down the line. For example, when PlayStation 6 comes out, we won't have to build a new community from scratch to accommodate it. Also, by centralizing content on one community, we can have a better quality of discussion take place.

If you take a look at !nintendo@lemmy.world, that is what it will be like. That community is primarily focused on Nintendo Switch while not having to be c/NintendoSwitch, which would limit them down the line.

And for those of us that want to use this community instead? Can the modship be passed to someone else?

We will stay as mods and the community is welcome to build this community as they see fit. Ultimately this community voted to merge with c/PlayStation. This wasn't a unilateral decision by the mods. We posted several times to gather feedback from the community.

c/PlayStation was essentially a ghost town. This community was way more active by comparison. The mods over there asked if we wanted to take over and we agreed, in an effort to unify the PlayStation community under one banner.

c/PlayStation will still have all of the PS5 content and be heavily PS5 focused. There wasn't much legacy console talk previously on PlayStation anyway. The change is mostly semantic. Additionally, we may branch out and discuss the brand as a whole or expand to things like The Last of Us TV show discussion threads, or if the Ghost of Tsushima movie comes out. Stuff like that. But rest assured, PS5 content will remain the bulk of content as it is the current gen console.

So we are abandoning a working community for a ghost town. Great, sounds like a solid decision.

Ghost Town meaning the former mods were not posting consistent daily content. Despite that fact, the c/PlayStation community has 1k more subs than c/PS5 does. So you are completely missing the point. All the daily posts that were on c/PS5 (99% of which are posted solely by me) will now be on c/PlayStation. It's not that hard to understand.

Again, the c/PS5 community voted to do this. These people will be following us over there. A few hundred have already subbed to the new community seamlessly, and most were already subbed to both. You act like hitting subscribe on a new community is so difficult. More people care about PlayStation than people who own a PS5. PlayStation (the name) will attract and onboard more people than PS5 will. If you don't agree or don't see that, I can't help you. Sorry.

If you want the content and discussion come join us. It's one button away. Otherwise seed your own PS5 content to c/PS5 to grow it. I left it active for a reason.
