They were thinking of making a Minority Report adaptation (with Arnold, not Cruise) as the sequel to Total Recall, with the mutant Martians as the precogs. Could have been a fun one!

You're doing your part!

If the top gun tape is the Pepsi promo it’s apparently worth $17500. If it’s not, it’s worth about $15.

[-] Atomicbunnies@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 week ago

I'll have to look at that. What makes the Pepsi promo worth that? Rarity? How can you tell if its that one? I just collect the tapes and watch them I don't do much research.

[-] GCanuck@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

Honestly I just searched “top gun vhs tape worth”. I know absolutely nothing about vhs collecting.

Looks like the Pepsi promo one will be obvious. It’ll have a promo cover. I doubt you have it (sorry).

[-] trolololol@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Why are people paying extra to work for Pepsi marketing department? It's messed up.

[-] djsoren19@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 week ago

There's just less of them, and it's technically a piece of movie history, even if it's a really shitty bit of history.

Aww man you got my hopes up 🤣🤣 I guess I'll just watch my normal pleb one haha. Just kidding!

Edit: I just want to say this has been a fun interaction. This is a great community!

If I understand right, that was the first ad subsidizing the cost of a vhs movie. "trouble with your refreshment system"

[-] Atomicbunnies@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago

Ahh yes that makes sense. I can see that copy being rare!

Not saying it isn't, but it was a home video release of a huge hit movie well into the adoption of VHS (some folks might have been still clinging to Beta players in 1986) that was made quite inexpensive by the addition of a diet pepsi ad. It should have sold like hotcakes. I've got a copy with the ad on it.

How do you know? My thrift store has a ton

[-] daggermoon@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I have that tape. It can't be worth more than $7.

[-] MelodiousFunk@slrpnk.net 12 points 1 week ago

Wait, we posting VHS pics now? Is my hoarding about to pay off in sweet, sweet internet points?

...no, because that would require me digging things out. >_>

[-] Atomicbunnies@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 week ago

Didn't know where else to post haha. I'm new, I'm new I don't know what to do!

Did you guys never get plastic cases for your VHS tapes? Were they always cardboard sleeves?

Here in the UK, they were always in plastic cases.

[-] tomenzgg@midwest.social 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It varied, really. A lot of the Disney films we owned were in the plastic cases (probably other ones, as well; just don't remember anymore, at this point) and others had the cardboard sleeves.

I don't remember it leaning one way or the other, particularly.

[-] daggermoon@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Kids films came in plastic cases for some reason. cardboard sleeves were the most common for major film releases. Come to think of it, my bob the builder tapes came in plastic cases and that show is from the UK so that checks out.

Enemy at the gates is so good. And I don't like war movies usually.

[-] realcaseyrollins@thelemmy.club 0 points 1 week ago

Why were they at the office?

[-] Atomicbunnies@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

No idea. A lot of them were aviation related. I work as a mechanic. I'm guessing they were left over from back in the day.

Edit: there was three boxes of tapes

[-] KalSeth@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

I am guessing most of them are taped over with porn. or your boss is overly dramatic.
