BookWyrm.world (bookwyrm.world)
submitted 1 year ago by ruud@lemmy.world to c/fediverse@lemmy.world

I did it again.... started another Fediverse service, this time a Bookwyrm instance.

I used Goodreads, but if there's a Federated alternative, why not use that.. So I setup a server and opened registrations.

Enjoy, and please let me know if you find anything that can be improved or changed.

this is pretty cool, but I never understood the appeal of "hey guys im reading this book"

I just subject that to the first person I talk to at work instead lol

It's more like:

You: Hey guys im reading this book

Random Guy: Hey! I'm currently reading this book as well!

You: Cool! Let me check out what else you like!

And that's how you find your book people and with them a stack of unread but cool books you need to work through.

I'm reading Dune and House of Leaves right now, what books are you reading rn?

[-] pageflight@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Martha Wells. Finished the Murderbot series, wrapping up the Raksura. All very much of the same cloth, but I enjoy it.

Also recently discovered Naomi Novik's Scholomance trilogy, I had only read her Temeraire books before.

Oh thats what it for. I just read reviews

[-] Ludrol@szmer.info 19 points 1 year ago

I just use services like that for reviews and tracking what I have already read.

[-] OddFed@feddit.de 18 points 1 year ago

For me it's about tracking what I want to read 😅

[-] ikidd@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I read several books a month. It's never occurred to me to mention what book I'm reading to anyone, ever.

[-] mojo@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

Why not lol, is it not a big part of your day or personality? Why not let them get to know you a bit more

I use it pretty heavily for tracking books that I want to read in the future. I follow multiple people who share similar tastes to me, and so I'm able to find a lot of really awesome books just by seeing what they're reading.

I really need to ditch Goodreads and get into Bookwyrm. :)

I just created an account there and when it came time to add books, a whole bunch of books I read didn't even show up. I'll have to look more into it when I have more time.

[-] macallik@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

I use it. It's great for seeing your progress of reading a book over time. I update the # of pages I read for every book and the dates show me my pace.
