iirc the scientific consensus on when human civilization began is pinned to the era of the oldest findings of broken, then healed adult sized human bones. Meaning that at that point humanity had advanced to such an extend that they overcame the ruthless "survival of the fittest" and started helping their weak and injured.

It's quite sad imo, that thanks to capitalist exploitation we seem to be regressing even in that regard.... :/

It‘s to get other people to do the shit work so the upper class can enjoy their life more and live in splendour. I say that coming somewhere from lower middle class and even there it is quite obvious, like how my job is to chill in a climate controlled office, while someone else dies of heat stroke outside doing construction etc

somedays it feels like a mental asylum that the inmates have taken over.

The uncertainties of existence make people seek out an authority to provide safety. Unfortunately, that authority needs to make difficult decisions without the normal emotional fallout that would cause most people psychological harm, so the ones most suited for it are sociopaths. Sociopathy (a tendency toward lack of empathy, including -- in some cases -- even the desire to cause others psychological or physical pain) is an aberration. Perhaps it's even a disability in the sense that persons are not "neurotypical" and therefore require special consideration. Unfortunately, the culture greatly rewards sociopathic behavior, so not only do they gravitate towards positions of power, they are sometimes propelled toward them.

So, in short, you're right.

People are not a monolith. Some of them want a leader who is empathic, honest, and rational. Some people are selfish with an 'us v/ them' mindset. Some people will exchange safety for liberty, some the opposite.

When social systems become corrupt, when power & control instead of humanity becomes more important, then sociopaths rule.

Thing is capitalism hasn't become corrupt, it's a feature, not a bug.
And when a system not only encourages and rewards selfishness and lack of empathy, but depends on it to exist, it isn't surprising that some people use that to their advantage.
And fuck them for screwing others over.
But that doesn't mean mental illness is to blame, it is capitalism that cultivates the ruthlessness. If people were to try and hoard all of the resources and fuck over all their tribemates (or neighbours, friends, and family? Or comrades?) they'd quickly get put in their place (and/or provided with mental health support if needed) and if they continued they'd eventually get thrown out of the community, not allowed to take it over. Because people aren't naturally selfish like capitalism tries to convince us we are.

You are right. To add to it, capitalism leads to authoritarianism which leads to dictatorship and slavery.

Exactly right.
It's suffering all the way down, it feeds on it.

[-] MemeCollector@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Seems a little ableist, that.
From my experience, I would trust a mental patient a million times more than I would a politician or a capitalist.

Certainly the reason we join together in groups is to spread out risk and reward for common safety and security. Over time we also have gained efficiencies with division of labor that is going to bring some striation but we really need to keep it to a minimum so that we do not risk the reason we came together to begin with.

An international (English speaking) socialist Lemmy community free of the "ML" influence of instances like lemmy.ml and lemmygrad. This is a place for undogmatic shitposting and memes from a progressive, anti-capitalist and truly anti-imperialist perspective, regardless of specific ideology.

Serious posts, news, and discussion go in c/Socialism.

If you are new to socialism, you can ask questions and find resources over on c/Socialism101.

Please don't forget to help keep this community clean by reporting rule violations, updooting good contributions and downdooting those of low-quality!

Rules

Version without spoilers

0. Only post socialist memes

That refers to funny image macros and means that generally videos and screenshots are not allowed. Exceptions include explicitly humorous and short videos, as well as (social media) screenshots depicting a funny situation, joke, or joke picture relating to socialist movements, theory, societal issues, or political opponents. Examples would be the classic case of humorous Tumblr or Twitter posts/threads. (and no, agitprop text does not count as a meme)

1. Socialist Unity in the form of mutual respect and good faith interactions is enforced here

Try to keep an open mind, other schools of thought may offer points of view and analyses you haven't considered yet. Also: This is not a place for the Idealism vs. Materialism or rather Anarchism vs. Marxism debate(s), for that please visit c/AnarchismVsMarxism.

2. Anti-Imperialism means recognizing capitalist states like Russia and China as such

That means condemning (their) imperialism, even if it is of the "anti-USA" flavor.

3. No liberalism, (right-wing) revisionism or reactionaries.

That includes so called: Social Democracy, Democratic Socialism, Dengism, Market Socialism, Patriotic Socialism, National Bolshevism, Anarcho-Capitalism etc. . Anti-Socialist people and content have no place here, as well as the variety of "Marxist"-"Leninists" seen on lemmygrad and more specifically GenZedong (actual ML's are welcome as long as they agree to the rules and don't just copy paste/larp about stuff from a hundred years ago).

4. No Bigotry.

The only dangerous minority is the rich.

5. Don't demonize previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

We must constructively learn from their mistakes, while acknowledging their achievements and recognizing when they have strayed away from socialist principles.

(if you are reading the rules to apply for modding this community, mention "Mantic Minotaur" when answering question 2)

6. Don't idolize/glorify previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

Notable achievements in all spheres of society were made by various socialist/people's/democratic republics around the world. Mistakes, however, were made as well: bureaucratic castes of parasitic elites - as well as reactionary cults of personality - were established, many things were mismanaged and prejudice and bigotry sometimes replaced internationalism and progressiveness.
