On desktop Hover Zoom is life changing way to browse memes and gifs. One thing I struggled with when I moved to Lemmy was Hover Zoom support. While it worked with imgur links, these are few and far between. I had given up hope when I finally discovered Imagus works perfectly.

Imagus is a browser extension for Firefox that allows users to enlarge images and display images/videos from links with a simple mouse-over. It is similar to the Hover Zoom extension, which is a popular tool for browsing memes and gifs on desktop. However, Hover Zoom has been flagged as spyware, so users may want to consider using Imagus instead. Imagus works with a wider range of links than Hover Zoom, including those from imgur. The extension also has customizable settings, including an expandable set of rules for getting larger images, media, or other content.

Didn't hover zoom turn malicious like 8 years ago or whatever?

I thought that was imagus lol but i dont keep up since i mainly browse through apps

Edit: looks like imagus had malware only on the chrome/edge store aince it was uploded by a malicious user and hover zoom had malware and ads introduced but someone made a fork called hover zoom+ thats open source and safe

Does anyone know why Imagus isn't working for me with lemmy? If the popup appears on lemmy, the image is too small. I've had this extension for years with no issues and had just figured it's not compatible with this site.

Required permissions

Without source being available to verify what it does I would be careful installing it.

Can someone explain me why HoverZoom doesn't work on Lemmy?

[-] xylogx@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

My understanding is that it is that it has a list of sites it knows how to work with like reddit and imgur and for others it does not try to zoom. Images Ihosted on Lemmy fail to trigger the zoom.

Been using imagus for a very long time, since the original HoverZoom was compromised

Same here. Imagus is great. It's a shame it's no longer in active development by the original author.

But a team of Russians seem to be maintaining the "rules" so the extension can continue to function.

For not having any updates in 3 years the plugin still works great.
