Jesus had nothing to say about gay people. He had an awful lot to say about hypocrisy of religious leaders.

That retort gets so fucking old. At the same time as many fundies talk about how Jesus ushered in a new era of laws, they cling on to the bullshit written by randos hundreds of thousands or years earlier.
These are the same books that shout about how eating shellfish and mixing fabrics are affronts to God. The same ones that herald how virtuous a guy is because he was going to murder his own kid because of a talking bush. The same ones that go into graphic detail about donkey emissions. And yet certain snippets are still relevant in the midsts of all that dross? Give me a break!
And before any Christians respond, know that I (and others) don't care. You can obsess over the old testament all you like. If you find value in their writings then good for you. But don't force that discriminatory, hateful crap on other people.

I was raised the new covenant of the new testament overrides the old covenant of the old testament, the whole idea of Jesus saves doesn't work otherwise. I don't understand it, I was taught the old testament was basically context and prophecy.

I think part of the reason that xtianity is so fundamentally schizo when it comes to their Belief System's claims is because they started as a set of Jewish heretics that wanted to rope in "Gentiles" of the day, so it all starts there.
They have their new character talk about the "jot and tittle" thing to throw a bone to the old stuff and using that to legitimize their claims of him being a fulfillment of some prophecy. But then, wonder of wonders, they claim they have a "new covenant" (lol) and that the laws they find inconvenient (especially for converts) are merely "Mosaic law". I mean, how can you really square such things?
It's interesting that most (non-Mormon) xtians can see how the "revelations" from LDS presidents on such things as having black members in their church are, ahem, obviously influenced by the winds of change, but they cannot apply this same logic to their own origins...

While the strongest Biblical criticisms of homosexuality are in the Old Testament, such criticism is also not exclusive to the Old Testament.
e.g. the Book of Romans is part of the New Testament:

In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.
Who decided that Paul was a worthy prophet though? Who chose the books? The only reason for revelations was that they didn't like the apocalypse of Peter. I would recommend most things with a grain of salt, but more for anything outside of the Gospel, and yes, it should still have some salt.
Agreed, I never understood why xtians that include the writings of Paul shouldn't be called "Paulians" instead.
Paul never even met the character of Jesus, according to their own version of things. That's pretty wild.

Nah, Christ teaches empathy, and empathy is currently not en vogue in US Christian churches.

They lied about him shoving a priest. And they chastised him for saying a prayer that begs for the empathy of others.
Christianity is hypocrisy, all the way down.
It's his own fault. He should've brought a switch and started whipping people whilst turning over a few tables.
His behavior wasn't Christ-like enough.
Only jesus would want to whip people while playing the newest mario games. I understand not needing tables though, the switch is great handheld.
I was in a thread the other week where someone said they hated “religion” but didn’t have a problem with “faith”. I think I’m starting to understand what they meant by that.
When people reduce their faith to religion it loses its power and leads people astray.
You can have faith, hope and a strong belief in God and still not be religious.
Religion is the song and dance that we perform for each other. It's meaningless
What matters is how you live your life and treat other people.
Also there needs to be a distinction between organized religions with a structured hierarch and folk religions that are moreso a bunch of tennents and traditions that can be as localized and small as a single family or clan. For example damn near every American-Scots family who have been in North America long enough my own included seem to practices a type of ancestor worship usually alongside Christianity, why is that no fucking clue my best guess is that it's due to a certain level of social isolation.
