It's starting to feel just like any old social media/forum but with less users...

I started enjoy lemmy a lot more when I embraced a more active hands on mindset.

I opened a community for my niche metal detecting hobby and post every find I can.

Then I became a mod of several communities I was really into and embraced my creative side to give them glow-ups. Custom animated artwork and high quality banners. Detailed descriptions and change-logs. Still actively posting in them to keep alive.

I try to make one meme a day in gimp and shitpost somewhere. Sometimes its loved, sometimes its dogpiled, Lemmy got its engagement either way mission accomplished. The computer should be used as a tool of productivity/creativity sometimes not just entertainment machine.

I'm so happy its a small social media. I have a chance to make a difference and be seen and socially network. To be motivated to post and have people recognize my pseudonym and help fuel the growing of a platform I believe in. This isnt a smaller reddit or the next successor to dig. Its a return to web 1.0 defederated BBS with a shiny new coat of paint free from corpo bs I'm so here for it.

Not OP, but yes I've tried that.

It was raining, so I went back inside.

Even when it's not raining, there's almost always a 100% chance of crazies out there..

I agree that’s true, but that’s not what I’m asking. I’m asking what are people enjoying here because it’s becoming bland but I like this form of content.

Btw how’re you doing? I hope you’re holding up okay. Saw a picture of my cat that past from FIV recently and thought if your situation.

maybe learn a new programming language or get into game development. they were "fun" for me

Thanks for the suggestions, and help earlier :), I have been wanting to learn Python for quite a while now.

What did you learn? And what communities can I discuss these?

If you are new to programming, Python is good (it was my first programming language too). I avoided JS as my first programming language because it's confusing. Some things are very confusing there and you don't want to deal with those confusing things before you even understand what programming is and how programming languages work.

(You can try learning something like Rust or C/C++ first, but it might be too much for you)

I switched to Rust after a recommendation system I created in Python took too long (about a minute). The Rust version only took a few microseconds. I'm currently building a Lemmy moderation bot with a plugin system and also trying out Android development with Kotlin and Rust.

As for the communities, pretty much any tech related one.

Yes, lemmy is smaller but content is higher quality. I notice a lot of people saying it's quiet... that don't actually post things. Putting posts up creates more content.

In my personal (and unsolicited) opinion, it’s probably a good idea to share things on Lemmy and Mastodon that interest you. That way, you’re more likely to attract the types of conversations you’d enjoy.

I should also take my own advice.

It really depends on how your feed is setup. Also do you sort by hot or new. New is moreover fun as you are the one picking what to highlight. Also it's a good idea to check on your favorite communities to see if any other instances have pop up of that community.

I subscribe to new communities community https://lemmy.world/c/newcommunities plus using lemmy explore site https://lemmyverse.net/communities. Also tagging people when you talk to them. So when you meet them again you have context to get to know people in lemmy. So they become more like real people vs just usernames providing content. In my experience if you put a little work into it. You find friends and lemmy starts to feel like an old school forum.

The bike, radio, and gardening communities are pretty active. The aquarium ones are a bit less so, but still something I like to check in on, or post in once in awhile. People will always answer your questions over there!
