With the resurgence of pirating, do you think there will be a “response” from the powers that be?

In general, what would that look like?

Specifically, do you think VPN companies based in the US or friendly countries will start to feel legal or corporate pressure to stop letting people use their services to download copyrighted material?

I just feel like these things always ebb and flow.

I’d like to self-host an app to manage and play podcasts from any of my devices via local/vpn.

I found PinePods which is new but looks promising: https://github.com/madeofpendletonwool/PinePods

I was curious if you guys were using anything else?

Thanks

P.S. sorry if this has been asked before, I couldn’t figure out how to effectively search lemmy communities

Love this idea. Except I think the watermark should be much much bigger and block the view of the entire meme. Ah yes much better

I don’t have an issue with a reasonable subscription, but hard pass on trackers, especially when you’re paying.

I think it also ties into a larger portion of people being fed up with corporate social media and corporations in general. All the ads, tracking, and shareholder profit driving decisions instead of what makes a product “good”.

I worked for a trust fund kid. It started off great until I realized he had no understanding of how money worked. Despite him saying / thinking he cared about the bottom line and the well being of the company, he really only cared about his ego and if his (rich) family thought he was successful.

Just in Time

I live in a one party area.

I’ve long wanted to set up a solution to seamlessly record video or audio calls and store them

Seeing how everything went down with Apollo and Reddit made me want to revisit the idea. I was impressed Apollo had the foresight to record the calls.

The way reddit lied and tried to manipulate is the exact sort of thing that I want to protect myself against in the future.

Any ideas? Thank you

Don’t come at me with a toxic Reddit attitude. The issue is not about paying for a service. For example, people are willing to donate to the fediverse to keep servers running. The problem is that the current state of the internet is dominated by paywalls, tracking and ads. Even if I paid for YouTube they’d still track me, feed me garbage from an algorithm and try to sell things to me (relentlessly).

Beyond spez (and the fact that he is a greedy little pig boy), I’m curious about the corporate dynamics that prevent a company like Reddit from being profitable. From an outside perspective, they make hundreds of millions per year via advertising, their product is a relatively simple (compared to industries that need a lot of capital to build their product), and their content is created and moderated for free by users. Could any offer some insights or educated guesses? Additionally, I’m curious how this all ties into the larger culture of Silicon Valley tech companies in the 2010s.
