People love to take moral stances / talk about sacrificing for the greater good, until their behaviour has to change.

Putting someone in prison violates their freedom.
Putting someone in prison because they murdered someone is still the right thing to do.
You're saying that like the liberals didn't still get a third of votes. Willing to bet they did much better amongst Christians than non Christians.
That's because water is necessary to life.
When doing risk analysis something that is required to keep people alive gets a few extra points towards being accessible for, hopefully, obvious reasons.
If even something that is necessary for life is controlled due to the danger it poses, you can imagine why people would seek to restrict dangerous things that people can live without.
