Ah, so it is possible to customize the parameters of flatpaks set by the developer/packager? That could make it a lot more appealing.

If you find it please link it. I would love to read it. I think I am happy with my setup, and Flatpaks make it possible.

Yeah, it seems like all this convergence of convenience is muddying the linux waters... then again it has never been that clean.

I must be lucky to not have run into drugs, but damn it is probably inevitable. Okay, I will find a better solution. Appimages are apparently the superior version of this concept.

I have never considered speed. For example, it may be foolish to use flatpaks for Blender or Godot engine? Or perhaps is it the startup speed that is slow?

[-] DidacticDumbass@lemmy.one 0 points 1 year ago

True. I have run into a lot of dumb issues with sandboxing, mostly in choosing a folder other than downloads for file interaction.

I have overlooked Appimage, and I will consider it. I am intrigued that you put it before native package. I had not considered using the package manager of the language it is built in, which honestly is probably the optimal way to install a package.

Alright, I have some reading to do. I love learning new ways to do things. I am glad I asked!

For sure certain package managers are better than others, and NIX seems to be in a class of its own.

I don't know how much time I am willing to invest in NIX, or Guix for that scheme power, but I can do myself a favor experiment with a few VMs.

I think the algorithms are not quite doing what you expect, on top of server delays or whatever.

The way I am set up, I start in ALL and sort by HOT. If the post start to feel too familiar I will go by active, then new.

What I feel works the best however is to subscribe to all the communities that you are interested in (don't be precious) and you will find that the subscriptions page has the content you want. It is nice, they don't get lost, or you can jump into a single community and see all they have.

The most useful way to use lemmy of course is to post content.

Damn, it is so bizarre that email of all things would be the least operable by tech savvy individuals. Someone linked an article that explains it, and it truly is depressing. Like, it makes me not want to even have email... which is not really possible if I want to be employed. Eh, it's not like I DON'T already have free email accounts, I just don't always like the decision my provider makes.

Neato! There seems to be a lot of solutions for running a mail server.

Yeah, I think it is time, I need to get familiar with Docker.

Yeah, I was clueless thinking I could run it from my home. Hah. I just wanted to avoid paying for a VPS. Which is silly because I buy too much crap all the the time and have multiple subscriptions.

This is actually valauable.

Mastodon has benefitted from news articles and the sheer novelty of an alternative to Twitter, even before Elon Musk bought it out.

Lemmy probably won't have the same fanfare, especially given the stigma Reddit has, like it was a secret to have an account, or talking about it betrayed you as some weirdo or pervert. Whatever, Reddit never seemed to have the same social acceptance as Twitter or anything Facebook owns.

I think it is good to have a community that is self-filtering. Let's keep the IQ high on this one (with the exception of me, of course!).

Linus is stellar example of "good is not nice."

He will rake you over the coals because he cares about quality and expects better from everyone.
