I usually just borrow e-books from the library, download as epub and strip the DRM from the file so I can read it, and return the eBook to the library right away for the next person to borrow it.
I haven't encountered a captive portal at all. I can use the internet just fine without VPN.

I'm not sure if qbit has a setting for it, but what I've done is that I have multiple instances/docker containers of qbit. One is specifically for ratio requiring torrents where I don't have a bandwidth limit on upload and have a higher limit of active seeding torrents that the other instance.

I only use pretty basic modelling, and have no interest in advanced CAD featueres, I've tried both the link branch and ondsel, and I honesty think they're about the same level as regular freecad. None of them are even near as intuitive to use as for example onshape, they're actually a bit of a chore to use IME.
Providing 2-3 lines of explanatory context is hardly a research paper, but enough to illustrate reason behind a simple statement.
AFAIK, the author of this comic is somewhat of an asshat that exercises varying degree of censorship on a comic strip subreddit, based on their personal beliefs.
