Sorry I know somebody already kinda explained it but I'd like to weigh in on the concept. :)

All the cautionary sci-fi warned us dystopia would involve nanotech and cyber arms and robot overlords, flying cars, climate wars, mind-jacking hackers, a realistic meta-universe underlying our reality, militarized corporations, pizza delivery being one of the most dangerous jobs in America...

It seemed insane and over the top.

...Our reality is a "boring dystopia" because we have a lot of those hallmarks of that dystopian worldbuilding, but most advancements in technology aren't even interesting, mainly because they're immediately used to let bosses and corpos fill our lives with more dull drudgery and economic downslide.

...Tech is evolving rapidly even though societal advancement as a whole has perceptually stagnated.

It's like living in 2008 forever, but there's electric cars now, and computers read your emotions to sell your identity to advertisers and rat you out to your boss.

Computers are faster than ever but they're used to consume the energy of a small country to generate make-believe speculative gambling currency or ugly monkey bitmaps, and now threaten creatives' livlihoods or automate the scam industry.

It all boils down to it being harder to make a living and the rich keep adding zeroes to their net worths.

Our world is controlled by people so stupidly evil they make four-color comic-book villains look nuanced. And we don't even get cool synthwave neon streets or rag-tag resistance cells who (effectively) fight back.

I think we all hoped that by the time it got that bad, we'd have some good folks with nano-augments or "L337 H4X1NG $k!115"...but we're repeatedly crushed to the sound of our coworkers' moaning "It is what it is. Ya do what you gotta do." And we go back to work.

And that's just computers. Cars and phones, man, holy crap.

To take your fish analogy, it's like "Well maybe 5% of your catch is NOT laden with innumerable parasites, but they're the only thing that lives here and we gotta eat so...."

Edit: "But I heard there's a new breed that not full of parasites!"

"Yeah but those don't seem to migrate here and if they do they either don't thrive or get eaten by these bloated monstrosities."

Hay there, buddy. That's the last straw!

As a cultured collector of memes, one of the most annoying things ever is downloading images to my phone from the internet with filenames like "124fdgklhhr24.jpeg" and if I don't separately navigate to it, hold down to rename it, move it manually to where I want it for later, it just falls into the endless "Download" folder.

I think this behavior is encouraged precisely so people don't understand directories, fill up their phones with random nonsense, and then happily subscribe to "cloud storage" when it's constantly pushed at them.

And even then, perhaps illnesses aside even, there's so many dark patterns built into these mass-appeal games it can grab anybody potentially. They'll A/B test every little thing to see what holds a second's more attention.

Everything is designed so hard to push players' brains into a simple loop:

While(Alive == True): One_More_Match() Insert_Money()

"Why's it done that?"

Same. It used to be a lot more of historical reenactment, and a lot of the performances and stuff still reflect that.

But the last few times I've gone it's mainly been a themed craft show with corsets and tunics, and yeah, people with wings, steampunk hats, and Cloud's buster sword, or tails hanging out of their pants. :|

Renaissance times must've been wild, y'all. Lol

Oo I think you got out before the custom launcher with it's own BS currency that constantly "lost" your "cd keys" so you couldn't even play singleplayer games you bought on steam huh? Good move. Well played.

It's been so long I wouldn't be surprised to find that they just cancelled my account but all my "keys" were used already and my games just won't work anymore lol .

Meanwhile Black Flag occasionally downloads an update and I'm like "Yeah maybe one day..." Lol
