Except everything isn't okay.... Everything is actually really, really bad. Not for me personally, as a white cis man everything is fine. But for so many people the world is a bad and dangerous place right now, and that terrifies and stresses me the fuck out.

Prevaricate (/prɪˈværɪˌkeɪt/) is a verb meaning to avoid telling the truth, mislead, or lie by being ambiguous or evasive, often to avoid giving a direct answer.

Fun fact: this practice hasn't changed in the hundreds (thousands?) of years we've been asking kids to introduce themselves to a group

For lack of a better term? I'm not sure what to call it. I started arguing with someone who was claiming you shouldn't help people in public because it could get you into legal trouble. Without wanting to even get into the ethics of why you should help someone regardless, I brought up good Samaritan laws. This person brought up a guy in Illinois who was convicted as a sex offender for grabbing a girl by the arm and lecturing her for jumping in front of a car without looking both ways first. According to this person, holding someone underage, even for a moment, counts as imprisonment of a minor, and automatically gets you put on the sex offender registry for life.

Now, that seemed fishy, but plausible in an awful sort of way, so I did some digging. I found several sources that mentioned this story, and learned the alleged man's name is Fitzroy Barnaby, the incident occurred in 2001, he was convicted in Cook County in 2003, and it's a cautionary tale against being a good Samaritan (ugh). But I cannot find any court documents, nor can I find any original sources. Every source references a since-deleted article by the "Chicago Sun Times", and Barnaby isn't even listed on the Illinois sex offender registry. Was this whole story just made up? Or have records been sealed and scrubbed or something?

Adopted Plants (lemmy.world)

Hey there! Hoping for some help. I've never really owned plants, but my best friend is moving out of state and gave me 6 plants she didn't want to throw away. 4 of them are looking pretty rough. They are a ponytail palm, a monstera, a euphorbia Trigona, and mystery plant. They are all getting what I think is medium light? In my apartment, which has a north facing sliding glass door and windows, and they have all been being watered once a week. They also have been getting "miracle grow tropical house plant food" once a week, except for the euphorbia which has just been getting water. Any tips to try and save these lil guys?

I hate this news story. If I wasn't living in this community (Douglas county) I would think it's a good story. However, Douglas county has massive NIMBY policies, including outlawing everything that would allow someone experiencing homelessness anywhere near here. No homeless shelters are legal, no sleeping outside is legal, hell even weed stores are illegal in this massive county, despite it being legal in the majority of the state. Douglas county also created its own health department in protest of mask and vaccine mandates. It's a very affluent deeply conservative pocket in Colorado that makes me sick.

As much as I love my android phone, I have to admit Apple takes privacy and security much more seriously.

Went to Google Play to complain about Hulu. I noticed Google advertising that over 300 reviews had the verbatim quote "watch and movies that you love". It's always confusing that buggy corporate apps have >95% 5 star reviews until you see that the majority are just completely fake, and no one cares or is doing anything about it.

I'm a fan of this. It's better to offer content with context and education than to fully censor it.

For context I'm in the US. The last time I used YouTube without an ad blocker, there were 2 ads back to back, and way too frequently. I tried watching on my PlayStation tonight, and not only are they more frequent, they've increased in quantity by 150%. It's also very common for the last ad to last 2 minutes to over an hour long. What the actual fuck, why would anyone watch YouTube without an ad blocker at this point? It's literally unwatchable

Edit: the amount of unsolicited advice in the comments is unreal. I don't get ads on my phone or on desktop, I'm very aware of how to block them. I simply won't watch YouTube on my PlayStation anymore. I'm not looking for suggestions, please stop with the recommendations.

I don't feel comfortable with them essentially operating a monopoly that both consumers and artists detest. I don't feel comfortable with paying exorbitant meaningless fees if I ever want to experience a live event. It's never mattered what I'm comfortable with, I've always gotten fucked. I don't care how uncomfortable they are, I hope they get absolutely destroyed by legal fees and go bankrupt.

I don't have many people to celebrate with. Part of getting older is celebrating alone, which is sobering and a change of perception. If you're reading this, I hope you're safe. I hope you're with family that loves you, I got you have a friend.

The world seems dark, but it truly is safer than ever. Don't give into the media my friend. We're truly in a golden age of information sharing, which makes life terrifying but lucid and evolving.

Has anyone else noticed that the Google Play store reviews are suspicious?

Like, you find a scam company or app, and every review you scroll through is 1 star. And yet the reviews claim 95%+ are positive.

Is there a way to prove it? I've noticed it for 3 years now, I no longer think it's a coincidence. Something scummy or scammy is going on

Lately I've seen some... Questionable ads, to say the least. Is there no way to report these ads on sync?

If there is, am I just dumb and blind? Or is it easier than it seems?

It feels like early Reddit all over again to me, hopefully I'm wrong

For context, Android user, been here a few months, and I opt out of everything that's easy/simple/apparent to opt out of
