Letter from Charles Darwin to Asa Gray (22nd May 1860)

With respect to the theological view of the question; this is always painful to me.— I am bewildered.— I had no intention to write atheistically. But I own that I cannot see, as plainly as others do, & as I shd wish to do, evidence of design & beneficence on all sides of us. There seems to me too much misery in the world. I cannot persuade myself that a beneficent & omnipotent God would have designedly created the Ichneumonidæ with the express intention of their feeding within the living bodies of caterpillars, or that a cat should play with mice.

My mate was out at a book launch for a musician and one of the young bar staff was wearing a t-shirt of a punk band from the 70's. He was having a good natured banter with her and pointed at the shirt saying, "Like you know who that is."
"That's my Dad." she said.
I have a funny picture of them posing for a selfie together afterwards.

No, but here he is trotting out the line about Schizophrenia, which is a real risk, but is dwarfed in its societal impact by the downsides of alcohol. I don't expect he's said anything at all publicly about the impacts of that though, which would suggest that he's the talking head that the German press always contact for a negative comment about cannabis every time it hits the news. Especially as this is reported by Die Welt which is an Axel Springer publication.

That's just the body, his spirit is a Les Paultergeist.

Honestly, if it turns out that's what it was I shall be happy with that.

The breeding sow should be thought of, and treated as, a valuable piece of machinery whose function is to pump out baby pigs like a sausage machine.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

Remember that time she gave away a vital clues in the Richard Ramirez case and possibly extended his serial killing career?

The absolutely hilarious thing about this is that all of these MPs that clamoured for this bill because "Won't somebody think of the children!" are up to all sorts of terrible behaviour and a whole bunch of them are on Signal.

That cat seems suspiciously well reconciled to wearing that wig.
