I understand where you're coming from, but some of the strongest communities are in rural places where public transport is unfortunately not a sustainable option.
I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Losing a close friend is awful, especially when it's stacked on top of other things.
The SGU is the one podcast I have to listen to every week. They have been putting out such great content for so long now.
I'd recommend their show to anyone with an interest in science, technology, or thinking.
People who turn every discussion into a debate that they must win.
Amazon is shitting money. They're not exactly a typical company.
We all have to make decisions based on our own principles and with our own priorities, based on the information we have.
If I knew Tim was a murderer, I might not want to support his business. Up until I knew that, I might have enjoyed his products.
It's not our responsiblity to be all-knowing, but once you do learn something it becomes part of your decision-making calculus.
Then again, even if Tim's a murderer, his soap might be really good.
The one who didn't eat all the eggs he promised to eat? The ones cooked by Guy Fieri? That Smash Mouth?
Do you like wearing bright colours?
I remember a local zoo used to have a dolphin show where they'd pull a child around in a small inflatable boat, and I desperately wanted to be chosen for it. My mother helped me pick out the brightest clothes I had that morning, and guess what? I was picked.
That zoo no longer has dolphins. It was not a good environment for them. Well before my time, they even had an Orca - it must have been an utterly miserable existence for it.
They'll renegotiate, get some minor additional concessions and fall in line.
I totally get that Linux is excellent, but the Linux community can be exhausting sometimes.
"It's so easy to use these days!" is rapidly followed by "You just need to grep the package and recompile it for your kernel."
I understand why this happens, but I consider this is a usability issue that the Lemmy devs should try to resolve. It's not an easy problem to solve, though.
Federation is great, but it does tend to make certain interactions more complex. If Lemmy wants to retain normal users and not just highly motivated and/or technically adept people, the UX issues federation introduces need some serious work.
Motörhead still kind of works.
