Part of it is basic human shittiness, part of it is the slant of the medium, where glib put-downs work well and careful thoughtful arguments do not. Like if the discussions were taking place as a back-and-forth of journal letters we would discuss things in a better way.

America is mostly immigrants. Europe is still majority indigenous. You can't expect those to have the same exact attitudes; that would be pure idealism.

Another thing is the relationship to the Muslim minority: France is 10% Muslim, the UK 5.8%, the USA just 1.1%, so they're not going to have the same attitude towards Islam. Islam is a humdrum daily reality to most Europeans.

Racism takes various forms based on historical and political conditions.

The obvioussest example was when some American celebrity a while ago said Hitler's genocide was not racist because it was white-on-white. Like of course that's racist, it's just different from what you are used to.
