Sorry to hear you're feeling crap.

I'm having trouble looking for work for the past few months. Very few replies, the first "no" I got actually made me feel a bit more human.

I'm convinced that some of the jobs I've applied for or enquired about are not real or just for external-advertising-before-hire requirements. I've gotten some rude responses after daring to ask questions (eg: jobs funded by research money tend to have fixed funding start dates that might not be for another several months). Most straight up ignore me.

An old boss of mine thinks that my CV isn't conforming and mundane enough, so I'm giving his suggestions a go.

What sort of work are you looking at? I design electronics and get into arguments with computers.

Only for certain types of capacitors. In practice they can overlap quite a bit, especially with common aluminium electrolytic capacitors (these form & dissolve complex aluminium oxide & hydroxide layers on the plates).

Not pictured: Jesus' epic wrestling moves (swearing and minor violence, otherwise SFW)

  • Jesus: "Get ready to receive some holy spirit"
  • FBI: "Fuck, Judas got made, GO GO GO"-

In Kerbal Space Program your ships sometimes catch the NaN virus. If one fuel tank level is reading NaN then whatever you do DON'T try and fill it from another (full) tank. I'm not sure if it can spread to physics (thrust, mass, etc) EDIT: Yes it can happen to physics, oh dear.

I wonder what would happen if you landed a NaN-infected spaceship on a planet.

Thankyou muchly :) Looking now. They have unaltered originals too!

There are 3 separate glass slides for the different colour channels. Ooh. (is it healthy to get excited about this?)

EDIT: This collage of the 3 coloured slides is itself an edited version, but it shows answers to my questions:

They edited the left side with a clone tool to hide the fact some of the coloured slides/layers are a bit faded at the edges. This also explains why the left of the image is yellowish and the bottom reddish. Perhaps those slides were like that their entire life, uneven due to manufacture or developing issues?

Across the entire image are tiny coloured blips and scratches. Most of them were edited out.

The rounded shape of the chroma on the flowers isn't as evident in this version, but it still looks blurry. It's plausible it's an artefact from multiple lossy image encodings POSSIBLY combined with the red channel (glass slide) having worse resolution than the other colours in these areas (?).

According to whirlpool.net.au forums these guys seem to be the best quality for home users:

They won't stay good forever, however.

Alternative:

Ctrl-z
kill -9 %1 # Shell keeps track of job pids for you, job 1 is %1, job 2 is %2, etc
fg # Not technically necessary, but it's fun to see the corpse

The broadcast freeTV electronic program guide (EPG) on my current TV is trash. It's clear they only cared about big corporate apps (that paid to get dedicated branded buttons on the remote).

  • Squint to see the tiny text (probably because it was designed & tested on a non-4K tv)
  • You have to visit the channels first for the EPG to populate for them.
  • There is no line to denote your current position in time on the chart. Instead you have to read the (tiny) time at the top right, then guesstimate its position on the chart, then look down.

My decade+ old Samsung plasma is so much better; but it wasn't a "smart" tv, so broadcast TV was its tea.

(Of course this still doesn't fix the fact the "apps" are buggy and slow. Already had the TV warrantied and parts replaced once because of some of them going black and white. I have no idea how such as weird problem could manifest OR how the solution was to exchange hardware components)

Whirlpool sometimes has leaked technical information about outages or other insights: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/96n1w7m9

EDIT: Gough Lui (Gogli?) is also doing some detailed meta-coverage on his blog https://goughlui.com/2023/11/08/breaking-optus-nationwide-outage-08-11-2023/

Bonus: in this once they're a bit blase, but one of the kids is levitating chocolate (proper reality breaking!) and I think they summoned the monsters to defeat a train, which is always cool in my books. Bonus seamonsters too. I'm just a bit uncomfortable with the kid running into the path of the train :|
