I used to manage a team of low income women who were primarily first generation Americans. Many of them had tough moms who never hesitated to use “la chancla” on their many children.

Their sense of humor ended up pretty warped, and it was always my impression that it was a self defense thing to normalize the abuse they grew up with. By seeing that behavior as funny, it excuses similar things that were done to them.

I usually tried to ignore it without judging, but I always put a stop to it once they started sharing online videos at work. People are entitled to their own interpretation of their history, but there is no context where a video of a kid sobbing is funny to me.

Don’t get me wrong, I want a clean world too, but what replaces the things we ban? Do we go back to horses (and all the animal cruelty that includes), or does someone foot the bill for everyone to get electric vehicles with charging stations that are 100% renewable?

Same with cigarettes—I’m ok with banning them in a world with free mental healthcare, humane working conditions, and stress relief spaces on every public block. Since that isn’t the world we live in though…I’m going to continue to defend people’s ability to reduce their stress with 5 minutes of nicotine, even if it is at the detriment of their own health. Some lives are so hard that extending them isn’t desirable—so the goal becomes to make the best of the time you have.

Seems silly to restrict or punish people for that reality, especially when nothing is being done to address the root causes of why people want to smoke in the first place.

Do you have any evidence for this, or are you just looking at mod logs across instances? There have been about a billion little things that have slowed or stopped content from sharing properly over the history of this system so far—how can you be sure there is malevolence on their part and not simply a bug that hasn’t been patched?

I would bet that at least 90% of Lemmy could afford a recurring donation of $1 to $3 per month. If 90% of 50,000 users donated $1 per month, they could bring in $45,000 per year. Currently, the 1172 donators are donating even more than that, which pays for 1 full time developer. If we picked up the slack, they could afford two, effectively doubling the dedicated work output.

It’s that simple. Either we band together and keep this system afloat, or we give our data to corporations so they can sell it and pay the bills that way. There isn’t really a third option.

Edit: I can’t believe this has been up this long and nobody has corrected my awful math. It isn’t $45,000 per year, it’s 45,000 users donating a combined total of $540,000 per year. Basically, 90% of us donating $1 per month could take this rocket ship straight to the moon.

I just want to know how trees have any kind of bias that isn’t directly related to their needs for survival and growth.
