Weaponizing Jewish fear, from Tel Aviv to Amsterdam: Rhetoric about ‘pogroms’ and ‘Jew hunts’ aims to obscure reality by generating mass hysteria — which can then be used to advance a far-right agenda.
(+972 Magazine, 2024-11-15)

———

“In the wake of October 7, scholars of antisemitism, genocide, and Jewish history have warned of the ways that particularly traumatic episodes in Jewish history have been evoked to justify Israel’s onslaught on Gaza and crack down on those who criticize it. As antisemitism scholar Brendan McGeever articulated clearly, despite being brutal and disturbing, the incident in Amsterdam was no pogrom ... The proliferation of this term and others like it in the aftermath of the violence only served to obfuscate the reality of those events through creating mass hysteria…“

“Several Muslim and Arab supporters of Trump said they hoped Richard Grenell, Trump's former acting director of national intelligence, would play a key role after he led months of outreach to Muslim and Arab American communities, and was even introduced as a potential next secretary of state at events.

“Another key Trump ally, Massad Boulos, the Lebanese father-in-law of Trump's daughter Tiffany, met repeatedly with Arab American and Muslim leaders.

“Both promised Arab American and Muslim voters that Trump was a candidate for peace who would act swiftly to end the wars in the Middle East and beyond…”

Fr. Albanese’s answer to a question “Do you believe that Israel has a right to exist?”

https://social.coop/@raph/113477119266226969

🙏 I couldn’t but transcribe. Corrections welcome.

“Israel does exist. Israel is a recognised member of the United Nations. Beside this, there is not such a thing in International Law like a right of a state to exist. Does Italia have a right to exist? Italia exists! Now, if tomorrow Italia and France want to merge, and become “Itafrance”, fine! This is not up to us. What is enshrined in International Law is the right of a people to exist. So the state is there, the state of Israel is there, is protected as a member of the United Nations. Does this justify the erasure of another people? - a “No”. Not 75 years ago, not 57 years ago, surely not today. Where is the protection of the Palestinian people, from erasure, from annexation, from illegal occupation, and apartheid? This is what we need to discuss, hmm?”

'Absurdist': Jewish Artists Warn Against Germany's New Antisemitism Resolution (Haaretz, 2024-11-12)

https://lmy.de/OttKk

*Gift link* from Moses Mendelssohn Zentrum
https://wisskomm.social/@mmzpotsdam/113474618449238509

“Jewish artists and academics in Germany have come out strongly against a new government resolution aimed at combating antisemitism, with some warning that it may lead to a surreal situation where Jewish and Israeli human rights groups are deemed antisemitic by the German state.”

“Historian Prof. Miriam Rürup, who heads the Moses Mendelssohn Center for European Jewish Studies, says she saw a ‘shocking’ subtext in the resolution. ‘It speaks of Jews as a “gift” and of “our” gratitude that Jewish life exists in contemporary Germany.’ To her, this resonates as a division into ‘them’ and ‘us,’ effectively othering Jews.

“As a Jew in Germany, she declares, ‘I don't want to be seen as a gift.’"

After suspension, MK Cassif defends criticism of IDF as ‘well-founded statements’ (Times of Israel, 2024-11-11)

“MK Ofer Cassif defends comments he made about the IDF and Israel’s war in Gaza over which the Knesset Ethics Committee voted today to suspend him for six months.

“‘My political statements against the occupation, ethnic cleansing, war crimes and genocide committed by the Israeli government in Gaza – witnessed by the entire world – are well-founded statements protected under the freedom of political expression,’ Cassif says in a statement.”

“‘My punishment is a continuation of the political persecution of opponents of the war and critics of [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s bloody rule,’ Cassif asserts, adding that he is ‘proud to be a partner of the good people who are persecuted by this evil government.’”

My pleasure.

FYI, in “Politbarometer”, a popular poll broadcasted monthly in ZDF (the 2nd public tv in #Germany ) , it’s been already obvious that majority (e.g. 69 % in March) find Israeli military activities in Gaza unjustified. cf.,

https://juedische-stimme.de/en_US//j%C3%BCdische-organisationen-weltweit-verurteilen-die-bundestagsresolution-zu-antisemitismus

… Our solidarity with Palestinians is already exposing us to police violence, and the antisemitism of those who would force us to be Zionists blends perfectly with the antisemitism of those who would put us in concentration camps.

Instead of uniting society in the fight against all discrimination, any such resolution will divide minorities by focusing only on one. But the present resolution goes much further, demanding that the whole of German society accept the state’s support for Israel and its countless documented crimes, and that those who resist this doctrine of genocide should be punished by all available means, ...

The call of “never again” was meant as a warning against the very crimes being perpetrated by Israel in Palestine, yet this resolution desecrates it by using it for a racist agenda that promotes rather than prevents antisemitism, and harms Jews along with other minorities. It must be opposed in every possible way.

6/8
https://juedische-stimme.de/en_US//j%C3%BCdische-organisationen-weltweit-verurteilen-die-bundestagsresolution-zu-antisemitismus

Despite claiming that freedom of speech, art and science must be protected, the resolution paves the way for an even greater stifling of those freedoms than has already been widespread, especially since October 2023. All major parties are now officially in favour of preventing funding for any project challenging the pro-Israel consensus and of silencing, uninviting, dismissing or even deporting anyone associated with such activities. The centrality of such funding gives the state immense powers of censorship, which inevitably lead to increasing self-censorship by those who wish to avoid repression. Given the rightward shift of German society and politics, it will not take long for such tools to fall into the hands of fascists. We already see the far right cynically using philosemitism (itself a racist phenomenon) as a cover for racism, and we know all too well that the people itching to expel Muslims will not hesitate to do the same with Jews…

https://juedische-stimme.de/en_US//j%C3%BCdische-organisationen-weltweit-verurteilen-die-bundestagsresolution-zu-antisemitismus

… The writings by scholars criticizing the definition are too many to mention, and even one of its main authors, Kenneth Stern, has expressed his dismay at the use of the definition to stifle opposition to Israeli policies. Similarly, experts from the legal, cultural and academic fields, have warned against this resolution. And, like the Bundestag’s infamous anti-BDS resolution of 2019, the new one exploits its status as a non-binding statement to make demands that would be blatantly unconstitutional in actual legislation. As the 2019 resolution demonstrated, the repressive obedience found in German institutions is sufficient to turn even a text with no legal force into a de facto law, relying on the chilling effect that accompanies any potential accusation of antisemitism. And while that resolution called for combatting the boycott movement, the present one seeks to outlaw it.

https://juedische-stimme.de/en_US//j%C3%BCdische-organisationen-weltweit-verurteilen-die-bundestagsresolution-zu-antisemitismus

While those most vulnerable to the policies affirmed and demanded in this resolution are migrants of colour and refugees, its cynical weaponization of antisemitism also makes hostages of all Jews, whose safety is used as a pretext for the persecution of other minorities. We reject the conflation of our identity with the settler colonial ideology of Zionism and the genocidal actions of Israel, which we condemn as strongly as do the Palestinians whom it oppresses and destroys, with whom we stand in lasting solidarity. This conflation is antisemitic in itself.

As in past resolutions and declarations, the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism is taken as the gold standard in determining how antisemitism should be understood. …

3/8
https://juedische-stimme.de/en_US//j%C3%BCdische-organisationen-weltweit-verurteilen-die-bundestagsresolution-zu-antisemitismus

The resolution reaffirms the approach […] , focusing on opposition to Israel’s crimes as the most important site of antisemitism. This is used to place migrants and refugees, especially Arabs and Muslims, under particular suspicion of antisemitism, along with the sparse elements of the political left that support their rights. It is consistent with this that the parties of the supposed political centre were supported enthusiastically by the fascist AfD (…), a party that has formulated a concrete plan to “remigrate” 2 million migrants from Germany to North Africa and has a higher approval rating than any of the governing parties; it expressed its joy… […] In joining forces with the fascists to support a resolution that calls for stricter immigration and citizenship guidelines based on attitudes towards Israel, all major parliamentary parties have clearly signalled their commitment to mass deportation and increasingly normalized racism.

2/8
https://juedische-stimme.de/en_US//j%C3%BCdische-organisationen-weltweit-verurteilen-die-bundestagsresolution-zu-antisemitismus

While paying lip service to “all the facets” of Jewish life, the resolution narrows that life down to one element: the state of Israel. A reminder of Germany’s responsibility after the crimes of the Holocaust is directly followed in the text by a reference to the attack of October 7th 2023 from the Gaza Strip, which resulted from decades of Israel’s dispossession, oppression and murder of Palestinians and triggered a genocidal onslaught that has now lasted for over a year. Germany has been an accomplice in this genocide from the start through unceasing military and political assistance, becoming the second-biggest arms supplier and even promising its support for Israel in the genocide lawsuit initiated by South Africa at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

With a certain amount of the Israeli #Maccabi (hooli)fans’ violence described, and yet this headline…

“What happened before the game?

“Street disturbances began Wednesday night, a full day before the match, after Maccabi fans began arriving in Amsterdam.

“The authorities in Amsterdam said supporters of Maccabi had taken down a Palestinian flag from a building. A video posted to social media and verified by The New York Times shows men climbing a building to tear down a Palestinian flag while others nearby shout anti-Arab chants…“

“Peter Holla, Amsterdam’s police chief, said that on Wednesday night Maccabi fans had burned a Palestinian flag in Dam Square,… and had attacked a taxi; 10 people were detained, mostly on charges of disrupting public order…”

[Israeli NGOs warn international community… continued]

“Human rights NGOs based in Israel today called on the international community to take action now to prevent Israel from forcibly transferring hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who have remained in the Northern Gaza Strip outside of the area, including by denying entry of essential humanitarian aid and fuel. The Israeli ceasefire coalition, the groups Gisha, B’Tselem, PHR-I and Yesh Din, said that there are alarming signs that the Israeli military is beginning to quietly implement the Generals’ Plan, also referred to as the Eiland Plan, which calls for complete forcible transfer of the civilians of the northern Gaza Strip through tightening the siege on the area and starving the population.”
