The early Internet had a few simple rules:

  • Never feed a troll
  • Never trust anything written online
  • Never tell anyone your real name or address
  • There are no girls online (i.e. people are not who they claim to be)
  • Online is not IRL

And most people knew these rules. The proliferation of the Internet has brought a lot of people who don't understand these rules in to the fold and it has made the Internet a worse place. "Normies" seemingly think the Internet world works like your normal social interactions - it does not. The anonymity of the Internet brings out the worst in people. We really need to bring back the rules of the early Internet for the safety of everyone.

Feel free to comment more rules if you remember any.

As much as I miss the early Internet though, I genuinely do wish I'd had more protection from the seedier sites. I am not better off for having seen the gore and shock sites.

I'll throw my vote in with Fedora KDE Plasma. The fact you run it will absolutely help with any possible troubleshooting, and Plasma is IMO great for anyone coming from Windows. Fedora, from my experience, doesn't throw many curve balls your way either.

Good luck with your friend's transition!

They're looking to install Nigel Farage as their prime minister. The island is derelict.

George Orwell wrote about his experiences with those in Down and Out in Paris and London. It's a decent book and an interesting look at poverty of the day.

I landed on Claws Mail myself. It does look a bit dated, but the UI is functional and the client works. I'm content with it.

Distros packaging software means that it is available to install with the package manager from their repositories. No distro provides every piece of software out there. This can be mitigated with Flatpak, Snap, GUIX, AppImage or, in a pinch, by compiling the required program yourself.

Sounds like you've already done most of the work. From what you've said, Fedora with Plasma sounds great for your use case. Good luck on your journey and glad to have you aboard!

I'm an analphabet, what does that say?

I bought Tales of Maj'Eyal from GOG and have been playing the Linux port. Yeah, I'd say it's my favorite. Even if I hate it sometimes.

Psychology is a lot more than just psychotherapy my dude. It's the study of human mind and behavior. It's a vast field of study.

Ah, ReiserFS. I remember when it was the cool kid's choice. Then with the murdering it went out of style. They were weird times.
