The only uniquely human pursuits are art and human connection. Those both fly directly in the face of what our sick society values. There is no freedom (or success and sustainability) until we find a way to end runaway consumption.

They’re rereleasing movies in theaters because they decided to stop making movies in order to break strikes. As a result, a job that consistently paid $100,000 over 10 years has made me $20,000 in the past two years.

Don’t go see this unless you are a scab who doesn’t care about the hardworking people that take pride in working in the film industry.

Pirate the fuck out of this movie.

decentralization

  • switched to a split ergonomic mechanical keyboard
  • working on a fork of Lemmy geared toward inventory called “Lemventory”
  • moderating multiple Lemmy communities that are basically ghost towns (and I don’t care)
  • got rid of my Instagram (and all centralized forms of social media except YouTube) and replaced it with Pixelfed and others
  • letting my NixOS flag fly much more regularly now
  • hexbear defederation only created a Streisand Effect and piqued my curiosity about Marxism. I’m now much better educated about it and have come to conclude that lemmy.world is basically filled with smug, tech-bro, hive-mind, blue maga, chuds that support censorship of simple ideas and subscribe to blind, disingenuous American exceptionalism that wouldn’t even stand up to the most generous critical analysis.

Can’t believe no one has recommended putting your phone in a ziplock with a big bag of desiccant. That’s basically exactly what the rice is doing (minus the grains getting everywhere).

I came here to say exactly this.

Perhaps a space race with China would rekindle the motivation for our money grubbing demagogues to actually fund it.

Electron is a DEALBREAKER!

I disagree entirely.

I used the free trial. The algorithm was a whole lot shittier than spotify's recommendations. It had the same annoying vibe as the regular youtube algo where if you watch one video from Jordan Peterson, you suddenly inherit the feed of an Elon Musk worshipping alt right tech bro.

It was the same for music. I listened to one song as a joke then it stopped recommending good music and just made my whole feed into joke songs. Much like youtube's algorithm, youtube music algo clearly uses google's machnine learning tech (which they use for ads too) where it tries so hard to predict what you like without real data, instead preferring to use solely other people's browsing habits rather than creating a unique profile for that user without it making too many assumptions right off the bat. Perhaps, I'd describe that algorithm as "HIGHLY reductive" when compared to any other recommendatiion algorithm which seem more geared toward slowly discovering the tastes of its users.

Maybe I should switch to hexbear. I feel like I’m on 2016 Twitter, arguing with Neera Tanden’s astroturfing PPI team and they’re trying to brainwash other leftists to think that Single Payer is somehow bad.

Darktable!

I started a community for it at !darktable@lemmy.world

There’s also Rawtherapee.

Of course we can. It’s just that the powers-that-be put hundreds of billions toward liquifying babies but zero dollars toward anything that helps the world.

I made this comment in the thread of this story.

Probably a very unpopular thing to say: It would be interesting to see a middleman-free, decentralized version of Lyft/Uber where payments and ride-hailing are done with crypto and blockchain/smart contracts, driver ID’s using using DID’s, anonymized on-chain using homomorphic encryption. The hardest problem that I forsee with that tech is with dispute resolution. The idea stems from the opinion that the gig economy is great but the real problem (in matters not related to conflict resolution) is that the middleman takes a huge cut of the fare in exchange for doing almost nothing.

I was hoping that we could have a discussion about the pro's and cons of a crypto implementation of ride-sharing apps like Lyft and Uber.

For me, I don't think we'll see any implementation of this idea anytime soon because there are a lot of near-impossible issues for a decentralized organization to deal with in regards to conflict resolution.

However from my perspective, almost all other aspects of this tech seem to benefit from the elimination of a greedy middleman that does nothing other than connect two independent parties (one looking to get hired to drive and the other looking to get a ride in exchange for money).

From all technical points of view, the network works perfectly.

I've attached some interesting graphs to prove it. More info: https://cexplorer.io/

Could this be a potential instance operator stake pool tie-in?!?! That would be an excellent application for increasing the revenue of the instance operators and it would also force each instance to become more reliable.

This prospect obviously excites me but I do remember a recent argument I read about the Cobra Effect. A game-theoretically designed voting reward/punishment system based on real-life rewards would have a massive effect on current dynamics of interaction. It would also help regular people earn money from creating decentralized community that is free from advertising influence.
