I've been seeing lots of weather alerts

I read "lather alerts" and got really confused.

Fri Oct 11 2024

  • Brush: Dogwood Handcrafts Tabak Oridjinal, now with 28 mm Gelousy knot
  • Razor: Dovo 41 Inox
  • Lather: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original
  • Post Shave: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original
  • Fragrance: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original

Tough morning today, nursing a hangover and getting ready for the commute to work. Even though nice, a shave doesn't help take the edge off. I'm annoyed that I can't have a social life and wake up rested and refreshed the next morning anymore. Getting old --;

I like this little spartan Dovo. No frills, 5/8", round point. Stainless steel blade and scales. Utilitarian. I reminds be of the US army medical Weck Sextoblade, which I also enjoy. It's a pity that Dovo has discontinued these and instead produces decorated pretend-fancy razors like the Runde Sache.

  • Brush: Zenith – 506 N XS (extra soft horse)
  • Razor: Delolme – Le Thiernois №14
  • Lather: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original
  • Post Shave: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original
  • Fragrance: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original

This is the razor that taught me that there's a "numero sign" (№) in the unicode spec.

"Le Thiernois" is France's equivalent to the "Solingen" or "Eskilstuna" brand (and, to a lesser extent, "Sheffield") used by small manufacturers who think that their own name carries less weight than the fact that they are part of the knife industry in a city famous for it. Nowadays, "Le Thiernois" with that same art is a model of Thiers Issard, but this one's still from before TI became the only known razor maker in Thiers.

It's my only round tip 14 which makes it a great autopilot straight because it's basically impossible to poke your cheek or nick your earlobe with this unless you do it on purpose.

The extra soft horse is a nice change of pace. The big horse hair bristles lather more slowly that boar or badger knots, but that also makes it easier to avoid fluffy lather.

As befits lemmy😄

Lol, calling subject matter expert @PorkButtsNTaters666@sub.wetshaving.social to get nerdsniped on the different etymologies of post as in postal service and post as in postpone.

Oh, Tea

  • Brush: Zenith 506 N XS (extra soft horse)
  • Razor: Zwilling J. A. Henckels 14 (8/8", extra hollow ground, carbon steel)
  • Lather: Noble Otter – 茉莉綠茶
  • Post Shave: Gentleman's Nod – Musahi
  • Fragrance: Giorgio Armani – Thé Yulong

I didn't take the time to hone my new-to-me and freshly delivered $FriodomRiders and $HoneMeisterschaft razor yesterday, so I went with the closest thing I have shave-ready.

The chonky 14 is super gentle, with crisp, crackling audio feedback like an old-timey carbon microphone.

The extra soft horse is a slow latherer, which I've come to really appreciate: it barely produces frothy bubbles, no matter how wet the knot.

Delicious combination of tea scents today! Musahi is new to me, and I was surprised by the synthetic cooling agent (Mini pet peeve: I wish artisans would stop putting cooling agents in splashes. It really only makes sense in very few, very specific summer scents to me), but the scent is nice. Topped it off with Thé Yulong, a gift from my wife.

etched by someone else

Certainly a possibility, and I can't find any sources supporting or contradicting this. It looks certainly like an odd choice of symbols for Henckels. One thing sticks out to me, though: the Friodur logo is on what is typically the back side. All decorated blades I know (contemporary examples include Puma, Rolli, Böker, Filarmónica, earlier examples are Wade & Butcher, Frederick Reynolds, etc) are etched/inlaid on the other side, including later decorated Friodur blades.

So I think it likely that the Friodur logo wasn't meant to be the main decoration. This wouldn't necessarily mean that the masonic symbols were, though. I'm wondering whether this was a blade meant to be personalised.

My father (1912) told me what a big deal it was when stainless became available in items used by the general public.

Oh, I can imagine! I think it took a while before it became a true replacement for carbon steel, though. Stainless steel welding was a problem for a long time, and early stainless blades wouldn't hold an edge until cryogenic hardening (Friodur) was discovered.

I still have no clue what soap I’ll use.

Same! I am incapable of making a decision right now 😅

Maybe that's the origin story of Mr Why So Serious?

Sweet Sunday

  • Brush: Zenith 506B MB (27 mm × 51 mm Manchurian badger)
  • Razor: Zwilling J. A. Henckels Friodur 14 (8/8", extra hollow ground, stainless steel) #STR8SNOB
  • Lather: Summer Break Soaps – Teacher’s Pet
  • Post Shave: Southern Witchcrafts – Pomona
  • Fragrance: Stirling Soap Co. – Sweet Stuff

Theme: Teacher's pet is red apple with brown sugar. It smells sweet and yummy and happy.

I'm sad it's been discontinued, but luckily Braeburn scratches the same itch.

Relevant post and frag: Pomona is another sweet apple scent, and finally Sweet Stuff is here to dial the sweetness to 11.

Challenge: This was the perfect opportunity to try my new-to-me rubber lather catcher thingy that barbers use to wipe lather from the blade without running water. (My preferred kitchen shave spot is an the kitchen table, not the sink])
