Finished Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. It was a surprisingly easy read, and while I remembered the main plot, I didn't remember any of the details, so enjoyed the whole read.

Just finished the book moments ago (which is also why the thread is late), so haven't yet decided what to read next.

What about all of you? What have you been reading or listening to lately?

Finished The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King.

It was a nice book. Kind of YA, but fun to read. Pretty much a typical story of good vs bad, where good characters are super good and bad characters are super bad, with very few gray in between. Worth a read if you want a standalone fantasy novel that's quick to read.

Read The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi. My first Scalzi novel and I loved it. A very light and easy to read sci-fi, with Kaiju in them. Going to get other Scalzi novels, may start with Old Man's War.

Finally got my order my Dresden Files comics / graphic novels. So read the first omnibus, which has the original Welcome to the Jungle and graphic adaptation of first two Dresden Files novels, Storm Front and Fool Mon.

Second omnibus has all original graphic novels novels though, but will get to them later.

Just started Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. I have read it before, but it has been quite a while, so re-reading it before starting on the sequel series.

Yeah, the book is pretty highly recommended. It comes up often when asking for recommendation from King's books.

Decided on what are you going to start yet?

Caught up to side stories in Side Jobs by Jim Butcher. It's a short stories collection in Dresden Files universe. Only 1 short story and 1 novella remaining in the book. Short story is after next the book and the novella is after the book after that.

Now reading The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King. I have this book in my library for over 15 years. Bought it a long time ago just by looking at King's name, but then assumed it must be a part of a series (at that time all fantasy I had read were part of series), so left it for later and then forgot. Someone mentioned the book somewhat recently, and I looked it up again and found out it's a standalone book, so finally reading it now.

It's written in very different style from King's usual work, like a tale told orally. It's also a medieval fantasy, with kings, magic and dragons. Also, not as long, less than 400 pages. I am about halfway done, and enjoying the book. Should finish it soon-ish.

Where did the Tuesday go? Well, as the power vested in me as a mod of this community, I am declaring today a Tuesday! So, without further ado:

Finished The Crystal Shard by R. A. Salvatore. First book of The Icewind Dale Trilogy, and The Legend of Drizzt / Forgotten Realms series (publication order).

Loved the book. A quick and very enjoyable read. If rest of the trilogy is similar, going to get the whole series.

Read Small Favor by Jim Butcher, 10th book in the Dresden Files series. Liked in much better than the previous book White Night. Full of action, without much dull moments. Stakes keep getting higher and higher, but we are starting to see some bigger picture.

Currently reading Side Jobs by Jim Butcher. It's short stories in Dresden Files universe. I started it after White Night, but only reading stories that are before the book I have read, so this will not be completed for quite a while.

These don't cover any Bingo squares, except maybe Eazy, Breazy, Read-zie

Finished The Twelve by Justin Cronin. Book 2 of The Passage trilogy! Finally!

It was interesting read, but too long. Too much back story and details that could have been condensed quite a bit. As it is, I didn't like the fist quarter, second quarter was okay, third was interesting, and really enjoyed the last one.

Still one book remaining in the trilogy, but need a break, will come back to after a little while.

Read some more stories from The Complete Fiction of H. P. Lovecraft.

Now reading The Crystal Shard by R. A. Salvatore. First book of The Icewind Dale Trilogy, and The Legend of Drizzt / Forgotten Realms series (publication order).

It's my first Drizzt, and first D&D novel and has been on my wishlist for a very long time. Just started it so can't really say much about it, but enjoying it so far.

Still reading The Twelve by Justin Cronin. Book 2 of The Passage trilogy, so no change there.

It has become quite interesting though (or maybe it's just the Stockholm syndrome talking), I am in last 1/3 or maybe 1/4th of the book, and things have started to get together, though I still don't know what's the goal in this book. From all I have read, this seems to just be a 'middle' book whose purpose is to explore the world and take us from book 1 to book 3 where everything will be concluded.

Let's see how I feel by the time I finish it.

Still reading The Twelve by Justin Cronin. Book 2 of The Passage trilogy. Enjoying it enough to not give up, but not enjoying it enough it enough to read it quickly, so it's going slowly. Going to try to speed up and finish it quickly.

Looking for an interesting series, where the books are written from animals point of view. Kind of like Orwell's Animal Farm, but more fantasy / sci-fi / action.

We may follow a group of fighting turtle, or a rat's journey to home after getting lost, things like that. If taking example from movies, Ant Z is an example.

Any recommendations?

E-book readers are great. I prefer to read physical books, but for some of the older books that are difficult to find locally, I just get the ebook.

Still have a 15 old Sony Pocket reader, without wifi or any bells and whistles. Still work like a charm though, and battery life is still pretty good. Though, I didn't use it much for about 6-7 years in the middle, and then light use for 3-4 years, but still, something like that to last 15 years, and still keep working is so nice!

Reading The Twelve by Justin Cronin. Book 2 of The Passage trilogy. Around 180 or so pages in, and we are still in the past, the story is interesting, so reading about these characters, but I am still not sure if it will have any effect in the future / present, or it's just for world building. I am now invested enough now to see where it goes though.

Still reading The Twelve by Justin Cronin. Book 2 of The Passage trilogy. Haven't read much more since the last week, but the few pages I did read are still in old time, and while they are interesting for world building, I can't make myself feel anything for characters that have been dead for 100 years, and have nothing to do with the "current" story. Still, like I said, going to read at least first 100 pages, and then see if I still want to continue.

Also started The Complete Fiction of H. P. Lovecraft. I have never gotten around to reading any of it, so wanted to read it all in published order. Couldn't find any good collection in local store, so started downloading all his work (which is in public domain), but then found out about the ebook created by "CthulhuChick", she has basically gone through what I was doing and compiled an ebook with his complete works, organized in published order (excluding his one story from very early days, and two other non-horror stories. Since I wanted to read those too, I just added them in myself).

So, enjoying this now. Have only read first couple of stories yet. Would love to see how his work evolves.

My problem with The Name of the Wind is that it seems like there is never going to be book 3, and I don't want any more unfinished series in my life.

Yeah, made up words can be a issue when reading in another language. I tried reading Harry Potter in Spanish and all the made-up words in that made it a bit difficult.

[-] dresden@discuss.online 4 points 11 months ago

Why not both? ๐Ÿ˜€ It doesn't have to be one or the other.

[-] dresden@discuss.online 14 points 1 year ago

I find the question interesting that if there were no libraries, could we start them today? Shows the current state of the world. Well, at least the western world. Can't say much about East, though I guess it would probably be the same.

First, of all, not a leader, just a mod, trying to do my part in making lemmy a nice place for book readers. ๐Ÿ˜€

Dresden Files is a pretty fun series, but it's not some great epitome of literature. It's a fun and easy to read series, and I am realizing after reading all the comment here, it's not for everyone. Personally, I don't have much issue with that. I don't always agree with the characters of my books, but I can understand if people have issues with that. I would suggest reading a couple of books to see if they are for you.

As for where to start, I always prefer to read in published order, (which in this case is also chronological order), but as everyone else has mentioned first couple of books aren't that great. The quality improves a lot from the 3rd one. So, if you start from first one, at least read first 3 to make up your mind. Or, you can read "Dead Beat" first, and if you like it, go back and start from the first one.

If you do start reading it, would love to hear your thoughts on how you like it. You can post in our weekly what are you reading thread, or just make a separate post.

Edit: Forgot to mention, the books are pretty formulaic, (don't know if they improve further along or not), I don't think I would enjoy them reading back to back. But reading them after adding a break of one or two books is keeping them very enjoyable.

[-] dresden@discuss.online 4 points 1 year ago

This is Books community, if we though talking about the books we have already read isn't interesting, I don't think we would be here. ๐Ÿ˜€

Would love to hear what you think about the book.

[-] dresden@discuss.online 4 points 1 year ago

Not reading anything Fantasy right now. Unless we count manga, in that case, reading JuJutsu Kaisen. Just started it. Liking it so far.

We also have a weekly thread (not a lie) at /c/books@lemmy.world. You're all welcome to join in on the discussion. It's about all books, so everything from Fantasy, sci-fi, romance, non-fiction, text books, all are welcome!
