A month more and you could've hit a "reading for more than an year" benchmark 😀

Good luck on cheering up!

[-] dresden@discuss.online 3 points 5 months ago

Yeah, so many books, so little time. I have books in my wishlist for more than a decade, and even some in backlog for a very long time.

Huh, how come I didn't know there was a Ghibli movie on A Wizard of Earthsea! Time to check it out!

Seabiscuit by Laura Hillenbrand.

Its about thoroughbred racehorse Seabiscuit, and one of the first non-school non fiction I read. I haven't revisited the book again, but I loved it. It took a topic I had no interest in and still made me love it.

That explains why I haven't seen you around. 😀

Happens to me sometimes too, The Better Part of Valor that I was finished couple of weeks ago, took me couple of months, I think. And it was only 300 or so pages. The Way of Kings on the other hand is a pretty meatier book, which I have to re-read soon to get ready for the upcoming fifth book!

What podcasts are you listening to these days? I used to listen to a few during commute, but now that I (luckily) work from home, haven't listened to one in a long time.

Yeah, I loved Project Hail Mary, the book was really good. Not perfect, but pretty good.

Heh, that sounds fun.

Finished Dead Beat by Jim Butcher. Loved the book. Series keep getting better and better.

After much deliberation on what to read next, went with Valour's Choice by Tanya Huff. Book 1 of "military sci-fi" series Confederation. Tanya Huff was recommended a long time ago on reddit, but I wasn't sure if I was in "military sci-fi" mood, but I am really enjoying the book.

The book is years after you join the Confederation, and it doesn't hand-hold you by explaining each "alien" term or how each species look like right away, giving you the feel that these words / things are so common that there is no need to explain them, but as the novel progress you start learning what's what and which species look like what.

What about all of you? What have you been reading or listening?

Holidays are over! Happy New Year!

I didn't get much to read over the holidays, but I finished The Black Company by Glen Cook. The story was interesting but the way it is written made it hard for me to read. Still, going to continue with the trilogy and see if second book is any better in that regard.

Currently reading Dead Beat by Jim Butcher. Loving the book. The series just keeps getting better and better.

What about you? What have you been reading or listening?

I read Poe when I was pretty young, and didn't really get most of his work. I think I need to revisit it now.

I was supposed to post this last week, but got delayed because of Thanksgiving. Hope you all had a fun time.

I finished The House at Sea’s End by Elly Griffiths. It was an okay read, not bad, but thinking about getting into another crime series with more action / mystery and less relationship stuff. But I have got the next 5-6 books so will read them.

Read the next Dresden Files novel, Blood Rites by Jim Butcher. I feel the quality of writing has improved a lot since the first couple of novels. This one felt a bit less intense than the last one, but liked the character developments.

Read Jujitsu Kaisen, Vol 4, not much to say about it. More action, more silliness.

Currently reading The Black Company by Glen Cook. I have the omnibus (Chronicles of the Black Company) which has first three books, so may end up reading all three as one book. The writing style is a bit weird, but I think I have gotten used to it.

What about all of you? What have you been reading or listening? Or have read and listened in last 2-3 weeks?

Filterable recommendations in different filterable categories, by NPR staff and "trusted critics".

There's a wide selection of books. For instance in "Sci-fi, Fantasy & Speculative Fiction" category, which is my favourite genre, I couldn't even recognize majority of authors. That doesn't mean much though, since I know embarrassingly few authors, but it means there is wide variety.

Any books that you didn't make the list, and you think should have? Or something that made the list but you didn't like? Or just a general recommendation?

I am reading The House at Sea’s End by Elly Griffiths. A Ruth Galloway mystery. It was supposed to be a quick read, but got busy with some stuff, so going slowly.

What about all of you? What are you reading, or listening these days?

Note: So, I posted this last week, but for some issue with federation it didn't actually sync. So, this will be another one and half week post.

Just finished The Empire of Gold by S. A. Chakraborty, the final book in The Daevabad Trilogy. I loved the series, a couple more series like this, and I would've to add Chakraborty to my favourite authors list.

Haven't started anything yet, may go with next book in Elly Griffiths' Dr. Ruth Galloway mystery. They are quick and easy to read, and work as good palette cleanser.

So, what have you been reading or listening lately?

Some tidbits:

  • Second draft of The Devils is done and gone to editors.
  • First discussion of cover image will start in a month or two.
  • Have written about a thousand words for the next book.
  • Some collector's edition info.

Finished The Kingdom of Copper by S. A. Chakraborty, the 2nd book in The Daevabad Trilogy.

Went straight to the sequel, The Empire of Gold, the 3rd and last book in the series.

What about all of you, what have you been reading and listening?

I finished Death Masks by Jim Butcher, 5th book in the series. This is probably the best book in the series yet, pretty much no dull moment. And I have heard it just keeps getting better from here, so looking forward to that!

After that, looking for epic fantasy, started The Daevabad Trilogy by S. A. Chakraborty. Read the first book City of Brass and loved it. A different setting from the "medieval European" one we usually get, and thoroughly enjoyable book.

Before starting next book in the series, read Elly Griffith's The Janus Stone, 2nd book in Dr. Ruth Galloway mystery series. It was a quick but nice read, I'm going to continue with her books.

Just starting The Kingdom of Copper by S. A. Chakraborty, the next (2nd) book in The Daevabad Trilogy.

Two Tamil books in one week!

Languages change over time, and any language that has survived for so long would have gone with many evolution.

*Mistborn

I haven't started the second era of Mistborn, was waiting to get all the books first. Now that I have the whole series, I am wondering if I should re-read the original Mistborn series before starting the Wax & Wayne. I remember the story, but I don't remember all the characters, and smaller details. Would I miss them if I read the next books without refreshing those details?

Congratulations! That sounds like a great activity, and a bonding experience.

Would love to know more about the book.

Nice! I have been thinking about starting the Discworld series, once I am done with Dresden Files. I have read a few of the novels, but not near enough the full series. I have few of the starting one, so going to start in the written / published order.

Have you read any other subseries of Discworld, which one is your currently your favourite?
