Oliver Habryka, the CEO of Lightcone Infrastructure, told SFGATE that he thinks the escrow company used to buy the property “has been trying to get in contact with FTX and return the $1M funds. My guess is the funds are still with the Escrow company, but I don’t know, we never had any of it.” He also posted a screenshot of a 2022 escrow document for the property on X, which said $1 million would be returned to an FTX-linked company called North Dimension. An escrow company holds funds for the sale of a property while the sale is finalized. Escrow in California typically takes four to eight weeks. It’s not clear why the escrow company in this case might still have the funds.

I'm beginning to wonder if ole Habby didn't make a tactical mistake on insisting on this particular point with El Grauniad. OTOH dodgy RE deals are like what made SF.

This is basically the quintessential example of "I am a smart person, I think like an LLM, therefore the LLM is smart too":

While comparing ordinary human activity to language modeling is perhaps the greatest intellectual cliche of 2024, what PG describes in the essay-writing process itself essentially boils down to beam search. Autocomplete, find wrongness, backtrack, predict more consistent series of next tokens. The fact that only one of those options is actually reflected on the screen doesn't change the fact that the writer is probability-weighting continuations in their head.

Being able to derive reaction as the One True Political Movement via immutable physical laws sounds like a wet dream for some people.

I caught a whiff of that stuff in the HN comments, along with something called "Solomonoff induction", which I'd never heard of, and the Wiki page for which has a huge-ass "low quality article" warning: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solomonoff%27s_theory_of_inductive_inference.

It does sound like that current AI hype has crested, so it's time to hype the next one, where all these models will be unified somehow and start thinking for themselves.

The EA/LW community loves to think from first principles, and that is usually one of its finest traits. I notice and respect the times their first-principles thinking leads them to be correct about things broader society is incorrect about—a regular occurrence.

I follow drama and blow-ups in a lot of different subcultures. It's my job.

Wait, you can get paid for this???

At the very least I hope they're making copies (dunno if the Twitter archive dump works anymore). Just being in Elon's good graces now means nada, the funniest thing about the whole "Twitter Files" saga is Matt Tiabbi being booted from Twitter because his main platform is Substack, and Elon then shadowbanning links to Substack in some form of demented revenge.
