I'm not saying Putin is a good guy, he obviously isn't. I'm critiquing the fact that Americans can't seem to take responsibility for their own fuckups.
For instance: Trump is horrible, and he might do evil things with Putin. But then democrats keep framing it as if he's Putin's puppet. As if he, an American, can't just be evil on his own terms. Russians must be pulling the strings, causing every shitty thing.

The whole world watches as Israel commits genocide. The Houthis are brave to try to slow down the massacre of the Palestinian people, even though they themselves have been subject to a brutal war against them by the US and Saudi Arabia. If you care about the poorest people, then hold the capitalists responsible. They raise the prices on the poor and for any made up reason. We've seen this in the last couple years a when they pretended that it was inflation while they hoarded more and more wealth. Let them pay the skipping delay out of their own pockets first.

China is both a dangerous enemy and they're about to collapse. The enemy is both strong and weak. Umberto Eco called that one of the characteristics of fascism.
The problem is that people point to the problems of the USSR and say it's because of communism, but when the USA does similar things, it's just them fucking up, not because they're capitalist. It's a double standard hinted at by OP.
The problem with the USSR was not that they were communist. I think that communism worked well for them, which magnified both their successes (beating nazis, reducing poverty, increasing literacy, getting to space, etc), but also magnified their mistakes (suppressing religion, art, etc).
