Also, way too many apps / alternative UIs for Lemmy have these ridiculous names that are all jumbles of the letters or puns on the word. I can't even tell them apart anymore.

Reddit apps didn't used to have names like that either, it was some policy change on Reddit's end that made Reddit Is Fun change to "RIF is Fun for Reddit" and Slide to "Slide for Reddit" etc.
It just doesn't do much of anything. We're not going to reverse, or even halt climate change with it. For any industry that cannot be made green that has to continue in the future, we should obviously do it, but the claims about it by the fossil fuel industry are severely overinflated.

I had exactly the same experience with /r/minimalism. Thankfully I found /r/simpleliving through it, but I quickly unsubscribed from /r/minimalism. The repetitive posts about expensive watches and wallets, people trying to get to the arbitrary number of 100 items for no logical reason, and people chastising others for having a bed was just ridiculous.
Many people do use Discord as a messaging app. I am really only using it for private messages when I am on data.
I only have two Signal contacts, and no group chats. Video is set to download only on WiFi, but I do need to be able to see images.
