The only success I've had to connect to my wayland desktop was with Gnome, (at the time, it only worked if I was already logged in, though there was an extension that let you overcome a locked desktop). Once in, it worked well. Sort of. Had no luck with KDE, though that may have changed. VNC gave me no end of difficulty so I gave up.

All in all, a bit of a fiasco. YMMV - I'm sure my own incompetence was to blame (but should it not be... easier?)

My go-to ages ago was UltraEdit. But I am not sure I want to fork over the cash. I'm contemplating Sublime. But I'm kind of diving into NeoVim to see if I can get used to it (vi isn't natural for me at this time). It has the potential advantage of being terminal based and is therefore very portable. There are a ton of great modules and it is very activately being improved.

The killer feature that UltraEdit and Notepad++ have is virtual space (ie you can extend vertical blocks over lines that are shorter that the cursor position and it'll automatically extend the line with white space. For SQL (and other things) this is a godsend for right aligned right brackets etc. (oh Geany does this too but it's a very janky feeling application.)

Sublime doesn't have it. Vscode ignores ongoing pleas to add it. Not sure NeoVim will have it, but there's no cost to me for trying.

The main things holding me back from UEdit are cost, and he fact that UEStudio is windows only. Not being terminal based is also a strike against it, but not a showstopper. It's just too much money when an employer isn't paying.

I know emacs exists but it's too deep a rabbit hole when I just want a go to edit text with a few minor bells and whistles...

Given how unenforceable this is (a sin of omission or source from another jurisdiction is all that's needed to skirt), will we be seeing a formalized 'certificate of authenticity' demanded by people to highlight things that are not AI?

(Maybe NFT will find find its utility? I don't know...)

Interestingly, a friend of mine just sent me this https://www.musicradar.com/news/linux-studio.

I will try to help him out with it - it's promising, as he does not have the hardware/workflow obstacles that I have, but he's also not as technically minded. I actually really hope becomes workable for him.

Update - it's ultimately a non-starter, I'm afraid. A nightmare in trying to integrate unsupported HW (Line 6, etc - forgot about those ones...)

Frustrating. Naively, I keep trying and bashing my head into that wall...

Personally, I hope the market share grows sufficiently that commercial enterprises start to develop for it. With the direction windows is going we need alternatives more than ever.

Gifts. Pointless, wasteful and often resented. If you really must give, donate to a food bank and make sure people in need get fed. (or give to a charity of your preference).

Update - I'm still giggling.

That is the funniest thing I've read in quite a while!

Thanks - honestly wasn't sure if it was just a 'sync' feature or global. (That's why I asked here.)

Much obliged!

The big issue is not the DAW. Reaper will work fine (as well others, I'm sure). The issue is plugins, particularly wrt extended functionality with NI stuff (Maschine, etc.), and a variety of other ones, from Plugin Alliance, etc.

Yes, you could probably get a lot of this stuff to work (though to what extent, I don't know), but it will not be supported. If things start having issues, or if a new version comes out, there are no guarantees. I had a wierd glitch with a certain PA plugin but since I was using Reaper, they wouldn't support it - this was on windows.

Also, although you could likely get your interface to run, it'll not be supported.

In the end, if the fun for you is the challenge of making it work (even with duct tape and bailing wire) then go for it. It would honestly be fun.

However, if the goal is to make music, you run the risk of spending valuable time grinding away on compatibility issues - time that could be spent doing the music thing.

There's a reason why people gravitate towards MacOS for music - it just works, even more so than with Windows. That said, I just can't stand Apple computers (it's the walled garden that gets to me - YMMV - it's a personal choice) and settle for Windows on a home built PC with a healthy dose of WSL.

The other big thing holding me back is Adobe - lightroom, mobile, cloud, are all very much part of what I need. No joy there in *ix-land.

FWIW, I exclusively ran linux (and FreeBSD) for several years. Switched back to windows for the sake of compatibility with my workplace.

Let us know what if you end up trying it out - I am tempted to test it out too, but I am unlikely to switch.

Interesting... any more detail?

Toronto tap water is actually very, very good. Tastes better than most bottled water I've tried. Very high standards here - we are extremely fortunate and I hope the high standards stay for a long, long time.
