I unplugged the bassist but noone ~~noticed~~ cared.
One of his kids is a Netflix exec apparently.
Depending on what part of the world these people live in, the actions of these vigilantes might screw up the chance of a successful prosecution.
I'm in the UK and I remember watching a copper interviewed on the the TV asking people not to do it as a lot of the time it results in inadmissible evidence and might even give pedos chance to delete evidence. I think he also said he was aware of multiple instances of the pedo-hunters getting the wrong person at the 'sting'.
That said, I doubt these pedo-hunters really care about abused kids, it seems mostly about bragging rights and youtube views.
Sure, but the body of the post mentions donating to devs and instance owners. I'm being pedantic I know, but I think it would be a more informative post if it'd made clear what the donation numbers refer to and what they don't.
Depends on what level of privacy you want. I'm using Linux Mint Debian Edition with GNOME installed on it and it hits the sweet spot between privacy respecting and Mint's ease of use.
the cops might have did it on purpose because they were ordered to stop it
Yep.
The UK gvmt have been increasingly cracking down on the right to protest. For example, during the proclamation of Charles coronation (royal officers go to towns and read an official proclamation out loud) a man who said (direct quote) "Not in my name" was arrested on a public order offence and dragged through the system until the CPS said they weren't going to take it any further.
At every turn the current Tory gvmt have urged the Police to be heavy handed with public order 'offences' and sort it out later.
Article says: "Ms Jones Doering claimed in the lawsuit that she never created, displayed or assisted anyone in putting up “any racist collage.”.........“[The] Defendants were very much aware of that since they knew who created the collage and who displayed it, but yet maliciously and intentionally publically made false statements about Plaintiff,” the suit stated."
She says it wasn't even in her classroom and she took it down as she also considered it offensive and put it in a locked cabinet when she went into the other classroom to drop off a lesson plan.
Article also says: "In October 2022, Ms Jones Doering was exonerated by a Hearing Officer who ordered her to be reinstated..."
I don't think the racist nature of the display is at issue here. She says her only involvement was to take the thing down and act as union rep for another teacher. Later, she was exonerated. Based on her version of events, coupled with that exoneration it does feel like she's been unfairly lumped in with the other teachers here.
OK, so they're a fucked up fool.
Sadly though, I'm pretty sure I could extend that judgement to a lot of people whose products/services I use, it's simply impossible to go through life only using products and services who's owners/developers have values, beliefs and opinions that match your own.
The best 'revenge' (if that's the right word) is to use their stuff for activities that counteract their shitty opinions.
It really won't. Mastodon has whole block lists and has done for years and guess what - user retention is no problem at all.
From what you've commented here, you're annoyed that you keep picking instances to join that allow shitty things to happen and then don't. The issue there is not defederation, it's that:
- Moderation is lacking
- Your insistence on wanting to join an instance that's a free-for-all
In the real world, instance Admin's are legally responsible for what's on their servers. If you want to defed from absolutely no one then you need to rent a VPS and spin up a Lemmy instance of your own. That way, the legal risk is all your own.
Could be, yeah. Nuance is difficult enough offline, let alone online when discussing a post on a different site which is in turn talking about a vid on another different site.
How To Make An Apple Pie From Scratch has the recipe for that.
(Seriously, it's a great read - one of my favourite popular science reads since, well, since Sagan.)
