I didn't see anyone link to the original!

There's a trope in old shows that the wife heard noises downstairs.

Elephants supposedly have great hearing. So the joke is that she's always hearing things because her hearing is so good.

Yeah. That's my favorite movie, so this comic played right into it.

The elections are run by the states, not the federal government. Congress keeps working during a shutdown. I can't see how it would hinder the election.

It would have unpredictable effects on the election though, so I can't imagine they really want to risk it.

I just switched away from Kubuntu to Debian.

The snap thing was annoying, but not a major problem for me, except for one thing: I switched Firefox back to a debian package, following the directions online to do so, and every few months it seemed somehow I had been switched back to a snap version. I removed the snap and all of that, but every now and then I'd realize I was using Firefox in a snap. (It became obvious when I tried to unlock 1Password - the snap version relies on the plugin, but the non-snap version fires up the standalone 1Password program.)

In general, I'm not opposed to the concept of snaps, and a browser is probably something that should be in a sandbox. But, I preferred the standard Debian package installation, and somehow that kept getting overridden. And that is the kind of thing that I hate about Windows.

The install was smooth, or would have been if I hadn't had a slightly unusual setup with my drives. It works just like Kubuntu, by switching to KDE with X11 (I had a few minor issues with Wayland), but without Canonical. I don't need bleeding edge, I just want my system to work reliably.

My Linux background: Spent a lot of time with Slackware starting in the late 90s, both on server and desktop. Switched desktop and laptop to Kubuntu around 2010. Server got switched to Debian in 2017 or so.

Unlike reddit, there’s no “default subs” on Lemmy. It’s either “all” or “subscribed”. All literally means all communities, so yes, objectionable stuff will show up in your feed. The solution is to block them, then they won’t show in All any more.

And the humans breed like crazy - at least, given what we see in the different ST shows; humans FAR outnumber the quantities of any other race. Even in the Undiscovered Country, one of the Klingons remarks that the Federation is little more than a "Humans only" club. So it was like, join them, train them, or we're going to be overwhelmed by them!

Why did they even announce it? Just start doing it and wait to see if people care when they notice. You should be able to figure out people aren't going to like it.

No one puts out a giant advertisement that their prices are going up. Trial balloon maybe, to gauge reaction?

Being able to accelerate to highway speeds quickly is useful when merge lanes are short. We have a car that kind of struggles with that, and it's pretty scary sometimes merging into 70 mph traffic. Normally it's not a major issue, but one ramp we sometimes use is designed poorly - it's curvy, so you can't accelerate to highway speed until after the final curve, then it's up a hill, and of course there's a short merge area into traffic that's usually doing about 70 mph. So, there, I REALLY miss the power our previous car had. It's a frustrating experience.

I laughed through this entire scene, then had to pause the episode and explain why to my wife. Great work by the LD writers.

I'm going through something like that now.

Why do they pay me for my 20+ years of experience, then ignore my recommendations based on that experience? It doesn't make any sense!

Why do they have me doing things that have absolutely nothing to do with that experience? I spend half my time on a project I hate and have no interest in, and has nothing to do with my real job...which, by the way, wasn't cut back to make room for this project. (Management calls it critical work, then asks for volunteers. If it's that critical, why aren't we assigning people to do it? I didn't volunteer, I was told to do it. It's insane.)

It's really killing my motivation, as I post this during work hours... I'm actively looking and have applied for promotions in other areas just to get out of this.

I own one of those trucks. There's several feet in front of me that I literally cannot see. Some models had an optional front facing camera to address the issue.

There's no reason for the height, other than "We can't be shorter than other brand". It's less fuel efficient, less convenient for hauling things (you have to lift stuff that much further into the bed), makes it handle worse, and makes it less good for towing. Unfortunately there are no heavy duty short trucks being made. Nor can you really lower the current truck due to the design of the rear axle. You might get a few inches, but that's about it.

I really like the Ridgeline, but it cannot handle the work we do with our 3/4 ton pickup (towing a heavy trailer).
