The combination of these two things is jarring because heroin is a Big Kid drug, not a prestige drug, and how, of course, could a neuroscientist smoke heroin?

Unlike this guy, I have no problem understanding that smart people sometimes like to do stupid things. There are a lot of doctors who smoke. This is not because they know tobacco is secretly good for you.

How pig-headed does this schmuck have to be, not to realize that if there is a "lot of money", that means the billionaire has committed a more serious crime? A billionaire who evades his (or her, but lbr most of these people are men) fair share of tax offloads that cost onto the public, who are much less able to afford either tax hikes or lost services.

You're right, it's a totally libertarian attitude.

Why didn't he calculate how many people are sexually harassed in a community? That seems a bit relevant, considering that most sexual harrassers harrass multiple people.

Isn't this just how every tech company starts out? Google just want to help you find things on the web. Facebook just wants you to help connect with friends. We are very serious people doing serious work for humanity and you need to listen to us, and possibly give us things for free. It's all about positioning.

He says like "well actually having access to abortion doesn't make women happier" , as if abortion isn't pretty essential to the happiness of SOME women. But he thinks if women are forced to have babies they'll realize that they really like it actually, because he's a wretched dog.

"6)deaths from abortion are a function of infrastructure, not law: pro-life countries/regions with good healthcare (e.g. Chile, Poland, Malta, South Korea (until recently), Ireland (until recently), North Africa, UAE, and almost all of Europe pre-legalisation) have very few, in many cases zero, deaths from abortion ."

Despite our good (?) healthcare, there was a high-profile death due to lack of abortion access in Ireland: Savita Halappanavar. And that's despite the fact that from 1996 (?) to 2018 abortion was legally permitted to "protect the life of the mother", if a panel of doctors agreed her life was in danger. In addition to Savita's death there was a case in which a raped, pregnant teenager became suicidal, but because doctors did not agree she should have an abortion, she was committed and put on suicide watch. How's that for harm? Women who travelled abroad for abortions also experienced significant medical and psychological harm as a result: consider the case of A, B and C vs. Ireland.

I used to read fanfiction, and by the standards of Harry Potter fanfiction, it's not even good fanfiction.

~~(insert "Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy" joke here)~~

Maybe it's just a matter of taste, but I couldn't get through more than a chapter. I wonder if most of the audience for it were people who didn't normally read fanfiction. Actually, I just looked it up on fanlore to see what fandom people have said about it, and the reviews are mixed....

"I read it longer than I planned to because I kept expecting it to turn into Harry/Draco slash [...] But then I realized the author was just a weird neckbeard who had some kind of strange Draco fixation but was probably not going to make them go gay. Also it was just a really bad fic."

Lots of gold in there. Apparently Eliezer was bullied by a Harry Potter fan forum, to the point that some of the users set up a blog called "Methods of Rationality sucks".

How many rounds of IVF is the poor pregnant partner, inevitably a cis woman, meant to do? Isn't IVF infamously fucking gruelling, requiring injections and ending in miscarriages? Is her husband going to make her feel like shit for refusing to make being pregnant her full time job? A massive amount of reproductive labour is just being taken for granted here.

And if these EAers refuse, the reproductive labour just gets passed on to other women. Grimes didn't want to have another kid with Elon (aren't they nonbinary? I'm sure it might have caused them dysphoria) so Elon persuaded one of his fucking employees into doing IVF and being their surrogate because it's important for smart people to have kids. (Source)

Reproductive rights - never more important!

The description of how utopians see critics ("profoundly immoral people who block the path to utopia, threatening to impede the march toward paradise, arguably the greatest moral crime one could commit") is extremely similar to the way scientologists see their critics and ex-members. I suppose at least TESCREALists have a slightly higher measure of independence than scientologists and are thus less likely to be convinced to poison a critic's dog or send them threatening letters.

I realise that a reddit-clone forum with a load of jargon probably does look a bit, um...hate group-y, but I wouldn't describe sneerclub as a hate group. More like Scientology watchers. The reason sneer club is no longer on Reddit is because it chose to leave (during the recent changes), not because it was banned (like, say, r/incel).
