I just tried registering as well, same issue. It looks like a problem with their registration process, I tried resetting my password and it was unable to find my email.
Real reason? Because product managers are idiots.

The way I solved this was by setting up a hotspot on my phone with the same SSID as my home network. The Chromecast doesn't know the difference.
