From the video description:

The Manila folder is a staple of the office environment, but it's also a titan of media - it appears in detective thrillers, crime dramas, spy comedies and mundane slice of life office sitcoms. But why? How did it become so prominent? Well it all starts in the Philippines.

While file folders, as well as file envelopes, are no longer solely made from abaca fibers (aka Manila hemp), the color it lent to its products still is used as a default in file folders.

My oldest account is at 9 years 10 months at the moment. Was a lurker for a time before that too. I haven't deleted my accounts out of concern of my comments reappearing, but I've kept any interaction with that site at a minimum.

Most of the time, I just check to see if any comments resurfaced, or if I've got a love letter from the admins. Neither has happened so far, but I'm not sure it won't happen. Until then, I will keep scrubbing my accounts.

I don't see myself returning there. I've lost any desire to do so, and my old, yet scrubbed accounts will serve as a reminder never to interact with that site ever again. Peek, if I must, but never interact.

Duolingo, the language learning app that profited so much from volunteer input, only to kick them out once they outlived their usefulness.

Reddit, the content aggregator whose lifeblood is user-generated content and whose distinctive feature is its army of volunteer moderators.

Do I hear an ironic echo here? Or is it just me?

Article text:

THE HAGUE/KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 (Reuters) - A Dutch court of appeal dismissed on Tuesday a bid by eight descendants of a former sultanate to enforce a $15-billion arbitration award against the Malaysian government, which hailed the decision as a "landmark victory".

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government was confident it was "closer than ever to completely nullifying" the award after the decision.

"Malaysia trusts that today’s decision ... will put an end to the frivolous attempts of the claimants to enforce the purported final award in other jurisdictions," Anwar said in a statement.

Last year, a Paris arbitration court awarded $14.9 billion to the Filipino heirs of the last sultan of Sulu, in a long-running dispute with Malaysia over a colonial-era land deal.

They have since sought to seize Malaysian government assets in France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, in a bid to enforce the award.

Malaysia, which did not participate in the arbitration, says the process is illegal. It secured a stay on the award in France but the ruling remains enforceable overseas under a U.N. treaty on arbitration.

In September, the heirs sought permission from a Dutch court to enforce the award in the Netherlands, Reuters reported.

However, Dutch judges sided with Malaysia, saying the original pact lacked a clause binding parties to arbitration and the French stay meant the claim was not enforceable in the Netherlands, the court said on its website on Tuesday.

Lawyer Paul Cohen, acting for the Sulu heirs, said they were disappointed with the court decision. He would not say if they would lodge an appeal against the ruling.

The dispute stems from an 1878 deal between European colonists and the Sultan of Sulu for use of his territory, which spanned parts of the southern Philippines and present-day Malaysia on the island of Borneo.

Independent Malaysia paid a token sum annually to the sultan's heirs to honour the agreement but stopped in 2013, after supporters of the former sultanate launched a bloody incursion to reclaim land from Malaysia.

The heirs say they were not involved in the incursion and sought arbitration over the suspension of payments.

This month, a Paris court upheld the Malaysian government's challenge against enforcing a partial award to the heirs. Malaysia said the decision implied the final arbitration award would be annulled.

After Reddit's response to the blackout protests, what made those moderators think Reddit is going to act nice? The mask has already been dropped, Reddit, represented by Steve Huffman, has already shown their true colors. Anyone who'd willingly trust them after what they've done is just flat out asking for pain.

Having said that, maybe those mods are trying their best to keep whatever semblance of "the old status quo" that might still be left. I also am guessing there's some kind of a psychological trauma thing at play here with them choosing to stay with an entity that has shown its willingness to use and abuse them, even painting them as villains. Sure, it's not a simple thing to just leave--after all of the effort they've exerted taking care of their subreddits. But they've got to realize sometimes, the best move is to just leave, even at the cost of everything they've got left.

I use adblock (uBlock origin) because the internet is nigh unusable otherwise. It's incredibly risky (even irresponsible) to not have adblock turned on given the danger of malware, or malware in the guise of advertisements. However, I'd whitelist sites that are decent about it--though in practice, I find it risky to temporarily disable my adblock just to test things, much less to whitelist them.

Most of all, there are other, better, ways to support content creators in the internet.

Proper dental hygiene is something that one should make a habit from a young age. By the time one realizes its value, like I did, it might already be too late.

Ditto with sleep hygiene. Those two are habits that I think should be learned and reinforced from a young age.

It's not just OPs strange and mysterious predicament that has made this thread epic, but also the genuine efforts of some of us to help OP in the midst of wild, off the wall, guessing.

And then there's the misplaced reply that ended up in the perfect place.

And I'm glad to have seen it first hand.

Just as the post title says, is there anyone using Anki here? Would there be enough interest in making a separate Language Learning Anki community?

Sure, it's sad for the families, but I find that my empathy is better off being spent elsewhere.

Even if some employee got caught in this CEO's whims, that employee already sold his life away upon embarking on a sub made by a company whose head thinks "safety just is pure waste."

What's a waste is this CEO not surviving to regret his very words.

So, they made their ~~sea~~bed and now lie on it?

It's hard to find empathy for those guys.

It is indeed goddammed hilarious. (Literal) shit gets old, but this is gold!

I am amazed at how much fuckery these motherfuckers have come up with to mess with‌ Reddit and I am loving it.

Oh no, they did literal shit posting, didn't they?

EDIT: I had to go check it out (via Teddit). They're not posting literal shit, but it's funnier than I thought.

I'm a bit out of the loop here, what might have happened on June 18 that have precipitated this spike in new accounts?

On a possibly related note, over here in Lemmy.world, there's a post by the admins that have touched a little on automated account creation. I don't know if those two are connected though.

Expected behavior from Steve Huffman's lackeys.

I’m glad I was forced to remove my Reddit crutch and dive in full force.

Pretty much the silver lining in all this. Best of luck to you and your adventures here in the Fediverse.

I've received this message on my inbox just a few hours after deleting my posts (all of them) last night.

I'm just glad to know where they stand.

And yes, I know that a lot of people have unsavory views about that subreddit, but I guess there's just no accounting for taste.
