As others have pointed out, even that won't stop them. These posts are over a decade old!

For now, Tom has chosen not to report the incident, citing fear of the police.

Out of this awful situation, I think this is the saddest part. I don't blame her and think her fear of the police is well placed. It's just so sad that even in such a clear case of police misconduct, with video evidence, she still doesn't feel safe reporting it.

You're talking like the First Amendment is the definition of Free Speech, and it's not. I don't know New York law, and I'm not an American, so I can't say if this firing breaks any free speech laws, but it definitely contravenes the concept of free speech.

This really echos of the Sixties Scoop here in Canada (and similar schemes elsewhere).

I'll agree, with one exception (which might prove the rule): www.ourcommons.ca which hosts official House of Commons petitions (I believe some provinces have a similar website).

There was a discussion a couple of years ago around gasoline taxes and how they are supposed to pay for roadway maintenance.

I just want to point out, even if they're supposed to, gas taxes do not pay for roadway maintenance, not by a long shot

I don't agree with the root comment, but Wikileaks has repeatedly ignored leaks of Russian classified info and many of their sources appear to be Russian Intelligence.

He’s not counted in the unemployment numbers because he hasn’t filed for benefits.

That's untrue. From the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics:

In the Current Population Survey, people are classified as unemployed if they meet all of the following criteria:

  • They were not employed during the survey reference week.
  • They were available for work during the survey reference week, except for temporary illness.
  • They made at least one specific, active effort to find a job during the 4-week period ending with the survey reference week (see active job search methods) OR they were temporarily laid off and expecting to be recalled to their job.

There are other statistics measuring unemployment claims, but when you hear, "the unemployment rate for Oct 2023 is 3.9%", that is unrelated to benefits.

That's a really small bubble. My employer has a 125km range before we can request an exemption to the 2-day-a-week policy.

Hopefully things don't change for your wife!
